Homework 9

This measurement activity addresses the fifth grade concept of converting among
different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (5.MD). In
order to learn and remember the prefixes used in the metric system, students will create a
visual aid. I would have students add to this, the
differences between each of the steps, so they know how
much bigger milli is than centi, etc.
Students will get into pairs to measure each others body
parts in millimeters, centimeters and meters. They will
measure first in centimeters and then convert that
measurement into millimeters and meters. Students will
measure each others arms, legs, feet, hands, toes and
fingers, face and height. As they do this, they will get an
idea of how long many of their peers body parts are.
They will also get practice converting measurements and
have an opportunity to see the differences between each
step.
The materials needed for this activity are paper, scissors,
rulers, paper and pencils.
