Discussion: What types of communities do we
belong to?
What is a community that we all belong to? A:
Family.
Discuss family and how different our families are.
Read We All Have Different Families.
Introduce activity= Making family chains. Show
Exemplar. Each student will take a strip of paper and
write ME and their name on it and glue the two ends
together making a loop. They will continue to make
more loops (that will be linked together) with their family
members written on them, but ONLY the family
members that live in the house with them. Ie: Mom,
15
Dad, Brotheretc. Miss. Meil and Myself will share our
Minutes
family links with the class and we will be able to see the
different family communities within the classroom.
Send students back to their desks and have one
student in the table group get a bucket of pencils
for their table group.
Students should FIRST write the names of themselves
and their family members in the MIDDLE of the slips of
paper.
Bring students back to the carpet to show them how
to properly link the slips of paper (student should be the
1st/top link).
Send students back to their desks to finish linking
the papers.
Closure
Time
Give students a five-minute, two-minute and oneminute warning to finish making their family chains.
Thumbs up if you think that all families are
different and thumbs down if you disagree.

5 Minutes

Finish My Community Drawings from last lesson. If finished that students

can silently read at their desks or take out their drawing books.
