Assignment #B
Bernd Elementary School has a school wide program for discipline that is implemented on a daily basis. The morning
announcement emphasize school rules on a continuous basis so that the students will be reminded daily of their expectations.
Bernd Elementary School has a
vision that caters to Students, Teachers, Administrators, and Parents.
"Bernd School Community believes in the worth and value of each student. We believe in the
ability of the student to make responsible choices. We also believe in helping the student learn
the norms and procedures that will create the learning environment in our school. We will teach these procedures, practice them,
and review them with students. We will do our part to help every student learn self-control and help them learn to respect
themselves and others. We believe that with positive encouragement for behavior, we can help our students make appropriate
choices that will retlect our school expectations. We further believe that by reinforcing positive behavior, interruptions during the
instructional day will decrease, while time on task and student
learning will increase."
C/ The School Wide Discipline
Program encourages students to take ownership of their own
behavior by explaining to them that the choices they make will not only help them in school but
il I! in life. The students are given opportunities to earn Bee Bucks for positive behavior. The
If students can receive the reward for earning
a certain number of Bee Bucks or they have the
*r H choice to trade them in for prizes.
MQWyche's class collected their Bee Bucks as a whole and
O

traded them in for the whole class too wear jeans. I also observed a student who received a free

(I Il pass to sit with a friend at lunch. Students who acquire 50 Bee Bucks by the end ofthe each nine
week grading period, will earn the title of, "Bernd's Top Bee."
Everyone is responsible for implementation of the school wide behavior management program; although, each teacher
is responsible for their own classroom. The teacher's main responsibility in regards to enforcing the program is to
reinforce positive behavior. She does this by applying effective classroom management techniques.. There are five
levels of behavior that provide a guideline for teachers which include a combination of positive and negativ
e interventions. Level one include minor infractions of misconduct such as; refusing to complete their work. The
intervention should be of the least constraint such as; redirection or verbal prompts. Level two include behavior that
has
been exemplified over a period of time. The intervention should be redirection and possible classroom consequences
such as, quiet lunch. Some behavior at this level require administrative intervention. Level three including major
infractions such as; ghting or inappropriate behavior. These types of behavior normally leads to out of school
suspension. The Administrator is involved and determines the necessary interventions. Level four is serious enough to
lead to term suspension. The Administrator is immediately notified and takes the necessary precautions. Level five are
your chronic behavior with over five office referrals within a 9 week period. The teacher, parents, and student will
meet to complete as behavior contract. Once the office receives the Office Discipline Referral Form it is documented
in the database which is sent to the Board of Education. This serves as a permanent record once the Board of Education
has a record of the students behavior. While observing Ms. Wyche's classroom, I have seen level one and level two
behaviors displayed with

the teacher implementing one or more of the interventions. The outcomes proved to be very

effective.
According to the Secretary, she was not defmite about how long the behavior
management program has been executed but she states it has been in effect since her 15 years of
working at the school. She states the Bee Buck system once had another name but she was not
sure of what it was called. The team of Administrators meet up on a monthly basis to collect the
data for consensus. The team focus on need of improvements. The number of office referrals,
ISS, or OSS are tallied up according to the teacher's classrooms. Emphasis will be place on the
time and day of the incidents as well as routines and procedures that may have resulted in the
high number of behavior problems. If changes need to be made in order to meet the students
need then the Administrators will make those necessary changes. The program thus far at Bernd
Elementary school has been very successful in terms of decreasing negative behavior and
increasing positive behaviors.
When I questioned a third grader and a second grader about if they knew what the school
rules and expectations are, they both stated yes. The third grader stated that the rules were
everywhere in his classroom. I asked the second grader to tell me one rule and she stated, " walk
in a straight line and don't lean on the wall."The students were very condent about what is
expected of them. The school doesn't have periodic assemblies to encourage the school wide
program but they do have the DARE program to come to their school for a week to administer
knowledge about drug awareness.

. In summary, Bernd Elementary school has done a fantastic job as far as implementing a

. . . . 65( successful school wlde behavior management Program. Thls 1s awesome because the teachers
can apply more emphasis on bringing up those CRCT Scores.
