1.) Lesson Content Development: Progressions

Instant activity: Students will practice their basketball, volleyball, or soccer skills before class
begins and while everyone is getting changed. This way they can practice their eye hand
coordination and fitness before we start class.
Set induction: Hey 6/7/8th graders. Today we will be playing a high intensity game called
handball. Now in America, handball is mostly played only in Physical Education, however this
game is a very competitive sport played throughout the rest of the world. It has been an
Olympic sport for decades too! This game is a blend of ice hockey, soccer, and basketball.
Progressions:
Introduction, skills task analysis,
activity, teaching by invitation, intratask variation

Teaching Cues
&
Challenges:
Cues are short
quotes of what
you are saying
to students to
remind them of
proper form.
Challenges
appropriate,
varied and
provided for
each task.

Have students in squad spots to

take attendance and explain todays
game.
TBI: Before lesson begins, have
different sized gator balls, so
students can challenge themselves.

Managerial Strategies:
Organization of space,
equipment, students;
diagrams of practice
formations, equipment set
up, and game situations;
methods for assigning teams
and transitioning between
activities

Prior to the start of class,

make sure all equipment
is out and ready for the
students to use.
Have students walk into
the gymnasium, sit in
their squad spots, and
take attendance.
Today since the weather is
nice, students will take one
lap around the perimeter of
the outside area. This way
we can keep an eye on all
students running.

Spaceball:
Step with your

Safety
Procedures:
Check field,
equipment, and
facilities for
debris, damage,
etc.; outline safety
procedures

We are not using

these balls as
weapons. Do not
throw them at
anyone unless you
are shooting on
the goalie.

We will be using
softer balls to
increase the safety
of students.

before we start class.
Activity: Fitness
After taking attendance, depending
on the weather, students will either
run a lap outside (a little over
mile) or run for a few minutes
inside the gym. Students need this
time to get their heart rates up and
blood flow to their muscles.
Activity: Speed Ball:
This is the first lesson of speedball
so it is important to explain the
rules in full detail so they play it
correctly for the rest of the unit.
Field Dimensions- We will use the
entire gym space for speedball.
This includes the bleachers and
walls.
Goal Space- The goalie is the only
person allowed in the goal and
crease area. Attackers must shoot
behind the crease, which is behind
the black line and two pillars on
each side of the goals.
Equipment- We are using a larger
sized gator sized ball for speedball.
It is safe yet bouncy enough for the
game of speedball.
Players- the number of players is
determined by class size. The idea
is to have as many students
participating as possible. There
should be some students that are
attackers, midfielders, and
defenders. There is only one goalie
per team.
Rules-Students are allowed to take three
steps with the ball. Once they have
taken these three steps, they can
either pass, shoot, or put the ball
down to dribble.
-There is no restriction on dribbling
the ball with the foot. -If a student
wants to bring the ball back to his
or her hands, he or she CANNNOT
pick up the ball directly from the

or picking up the
ball, have students
look left and right
to ensure their
own and others
safety.

ground. - The ball may be

flicked to the hands in a variety of
ways, or lifted in the air with a
pass.
- If a student breaks this rule, it is
the other teams ball.
- When shooting the ball, students
must remain behind the crease, or it
will not be counted as a goal. You
can kick or throw the ball into the
goal for points. Please see
managerial strategies for possible
goal points.
- You are not allowed to steal the
ball out of your opponents hands!
- To start the game, have a player
from each team in the tip-off area
for basketball. All other students
must remain behind the circle. The
two students in the tip off area
will stand back to back with the
game ball in-between them. They
will put their hands on the top of
their hands. The ref (teacher) will
blow the whistle to start the game!
- The object of speedball is for
your team to get as many points as
possible. The team with the most
points at the end of the time, wins!
- Throughout the game, switch
goalies and players around.

2.) Closure:
Have students return the equipment to the proper area and bring them in to you.
Discuss the different cues for throwing and passing. Remind students this
should be a very fast paced and high scoring game.
Students, you did a great job passing and shooting during our activities and
game. Next class we will be playing more speedball so you can all get a better
understanding of what a full game feels like.
