Specific Purpose: To promote Human Trafficking Awareness
Central Idea: Human Trafficking has a few campaigns to stop it, with more awareness more
people can support these campaigns.
Introduction
(Attention Getter) Did you know that in the United States alone there are 60,000 people
trafficked?
(Audience Adaptation) How many of you have heard of human trafficking? If you have
did you know there is only one major campaign working to stop this form of modern
slavery?
(Purpose) For the people who want to get involved and most should, this podcast will
explain how you can personally help. It will also explain how mass media can promote
and encourage people to join the movement.
(Preview) My name is Natalie Hardenbrook and I will be covering this issue.
A. First, I will tell you about human trafficking in the United States
B. Second, well discuss the sole human trafficking campaign and how you can get
involved!
C. Third, well talk about how with mass media platforms we can spread the word and
bring a stop to human trafficking in our beloved nation as well as around the world.

TRANSITION: Lets get started with some facts!

Body
I.

Taken from Not For Sale Campaign, Human trafficking is the recruitment,
transportation, transfer, or harboring of persons, by means of the threat or use of force
or other forms of coercion, or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to
achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of
exploitation (http://notforsalecampaign.org/human-trafficking).
A. This means that men, women, and children are being transferred against their will to
partake in a buyers desires. These people could be sold for sex trafficking or labor
trafficking. According to HumanTrafficking.org there are 14,000 to 17,000 people
trafficked from out of the country into the U.S. annually.

of people trafficked into the United States since this report has increased. Including
the amount of people trafficked within the states.
B. Polaris says, in 2013, the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline,
operated by Polaris, received reports of 929 labor trafficking cases inside the United

More people are trafficked for labor than they are for sex. Labor trafficking can occur
from small shops to farms, from domestic servants to factory workers. Victims of

labor trafficking suffer harsh working conditions with little or no pay, says Polaris.
They are essentially an indentured servant. Not For Sale Campaign says that many
people enter into work agreements willingly but after travel, food, shelter, and
documentation fees, they owe an enormous amount of debt to their trafficker.

interest and the victims are subjected to a life of modern slavery.
C. Sex trafficking might be the trafficking that media covers most but there is not as
many victims in sex trafficking as there is in labor. Sex trafficking can occur through
prostitution, sex shops, strip clubs, and in some cases residentially. Not For Sale
Campaign says that traffickers can make up to $21,800 per victim.

This is where the people can help!

A. A book written in 2007 by Dave Batstone, called Not For Sale, is what started the
campaign. It has grown to cover many parts of the nation and places around the
world including the Netherlands, Peru, Romania, and Thailand. All of these places
have a high risk of trafficking.
B. Through this campaign people can get involved either by donating or becoming a
part of the team by volunteering!

TRANSITION: Lets move on to how exactly the Not For Sale Campaign is helping and what
you can do.

According to Not For Sale Campaign they manage social impact programs on the
ground; monitor, measure, and access the depth and breadth of our impact; tell stories
to connect you to the most vulnerable; and create meaningful relationships with
people, communities, and companies. (http://notforsalecampaign.org/about/). Their
plan contains 3 things, safety and stability, life skills and job training, and dignified
work.
A. With safety and stability they offer a safe place for past victims and at risk
communities to grow and establish a place where the people can stay out of
harms way while also feeling comfortable. Not For Sale Campaign says,
schooling and job training programs furnish individuals with the skills they need
to pursue a viable future that is less vulnerable to social and economic shocks and

work, NFS works with organizations to get survivors into dignified and safe jobs
that they are trained for.
B. The first way to get involved is too donate. Anything from one dollar can help.
But, you can do more. Volunteer to help during any one of these stages help you
perceive the reality and actual dangers of sex trafficking, while you also help
victims. You can provide a safe environment for people who havent had one
before or offer jobs through an organization or business you may be a part of!

TRANSITION: Now we can get to how mass media and media platforms can encourage people
to get involved and spread the word!

IV.

Mass media consumes our everyday life. From the time we wake up in the morning to the
time we fall asleep there wasnt an hour that didnt go by we didnt partake in mass
media consumption. Imagine if instead of seeing ads like Nike or videos of a cat playing
with yarn (even if it is cute) we saw billboards covered with movements and videos
bringing awareness to the evil of the world. It seems gloomy, but if these issues were
covered and taken care of when they should have been we wouldnt have to worry about
them now.
A. There are two reasons why human trafficking is an issue. The first is that there is
little risk. As stated above a trafficker can make about $20,000 dollars from one
victim, and with only 929 incidents reported in one year, the reward outweighs the
risk. The second reason, people dont know how to help. Not only is there not
enough awareness in general but how can people help solve a problem they dont
understand? Its simple, according to Poonam Sharma, the most effective
initiatives taken by various individuals and organizations were: coordination,
information sharing, services provided for at risk youth, and research initiatives.

B. To solve this problem, media must bring awareness. News outlets covering the
issue nationally and also globally can help. Instead of just covering the story,
cover the entire problem. Internet ads promoting the Not For Sale Campaign and
other campaigns like it can encourage people to help. It is easier to get involved in
something when it is a part of our everyday life. Nike is so big because of
advertisements, if campaigns did the same thing they would get bigger donations
and also a larger audience.

INTERNAL SUMMARY: Since you now know how big of an issue human trafficking in the
United States really is we can review what we talked about. Human trafficking does not just
happen in the countries around us, but nearly 60,000 people are trafficked in the United States.
Of those people the majority of them are laborers and the rest are sex trafficking victims. There
is only one major campaign bringing awareness to the problem. This campaign has since its start
traveled around the world and is supporting people in 4 other countries, not including our own.
Through mass media we can bring a bigger audience to the problem that is human trafficking and
start putting a stop to it.
