THE PRODUCTCOPPER

OZ Minerals currently mines copper, gold and silver in South Australia and
exploration is taking place in a site also in South Australia.

THE PRODUCTCOPPER
Where is copper used?
The most common use for copper is electrical wiring,
because of its ability to conduct electricity and heat.
It is also used in air conditioners, refrigerators,
cookware, computers, and in art.
Another common use for copper is as a currency.
Copper is popularly used to make coins in the USA
and England, as well as many other countries.

THE PROCESSCOPPER
The process of mining copper:

The traditional method for mining copper is the process of breaking

the ore and bringing it to the surface for crushing.
The second step would be to grind the ore finely into smaller pieces.
After that the ore is concentrated with a floatation process, which
means that it separates the grains of ore mineral from the waste
material.
The concentrate, which contains 25%-57% copper, is then smelted.
To convert the concentrates to copper metal, one method is to melt
the copper with fluxes in a smelter furnace. This produces copper
matt, which is a combination of iron and copper sulphides. There is
usually 50%-70% copper in the mixture.
The matte is then poured into a converter (this contains more fluxes),
and becomes blister copper at the end of the converting process. It is
around 98%-99% pure copper.
After that the blister copper is tapped, then smelted in an anode
furnace for further refinery, and finally is electrolytically refined to
become the end product: pure cathode copper.

THE IMPACT
Mining is harmful to the environment. It introduces deforestation as trees
and plantation can often get in the way of mining. This causes the
destruction of habitats, as many animals live in the trees or forests.
Chemicals used in the process of mining are harmful to the environment as
they release pollution, endangering the life of animals and living things in the
area. As well as the pollution of water sources, these chemical are very
destructive towards the ozone layer, thickening it.
To reduce pollution we can reduce our mineral consumption, clean
abandoned mine sites, create higher tax on mining (companies will cut
down on mining due to the higher cost), change the designs of mines to
become more sustainable and environmentally friendly, encourage the use
of recycled materials in our everyday life, and produce and design products
that are more sustainable towards the use of minerals.

THE IMPACT
Many Australian believe that multinational mining companies deserve
to pay more tax. 1 in 10 Australians think that mining is overregulated, and many people think miners have more influence than
the environment movement.

CONCLUSION- MY
OPINION
Australia is a beautiful country, it should be
known for better things than polluting the
atmosphere. This topic results in a lot of
controversy and conflict between normal
citizens and government seating. Mining also
affects a lot of animals and I believe that a
mining site should be situated where minimal
damage is done to an animals habitat or if
possible, none at all.
