Innovations of

Planes
By: Carter and Macy

What is the purpose of this artifact?

The purpose of an airplane is to get things to
places a lot quicker. They transport people,
goods, and many other things all over the
world. Before planes things were transported
by trains, cars, and boats. Airplanes help these
things get to their destination a lot sooner and
sometimes easier.

Who was the original inventor?

The first successful airplane took off in 1903. It was
invented by the Wright brothers. Orville was born on August
19th, 1871 in Dayton, Ohio. Orville died January 30th, 1948
at age 76. Wilbur was born April 16th, 1867 in Millville,
Indiana. Wilbur died May 30th, 1912 at age 45.
Orville went to high school for 3 years, and Wilbur went to 4
years of high school.

How was it used when originally

invented. How is it used today?

The planes back then were used for people

to fly and have fun to imitate kites and birds.
Now they are used to fly people, supplies,
and different things around to get them to
different places quicker.

Classification
Information and Communication- send mail
by planes
Transportation- gets people and things to
different destinations.

Timeline
1804 - The first winged aircraft was made.
1896 - The first powered aircraft.
1901 - The first gasoline-powered model.
1903 - The first successful airplane took off in 1903. It was done by the Wright
brothers!
1910 - Eugene Ely took off and landed from a ship.
1914 - They made planes faster and lighter for World War 1.

Timeline
1918 - The United States Postal Service began using planes to send mail. It
arrived 3 day earlier than it would by train.
1919 - The US Navy made some of the first flights across the Atlantic Ocean.
Soon after that passenger flights began.
1925 - New lightweight, air cooled engines were created. This helped the
airplanes run better and faster.
1927 - Charles Lindbergh made the first solo flight across the Atlantic. He flew
from New York to Paris.
1933 - Boeing made the 247 plane. It seated up to 10 people.

Timeline
1939 - The first radars were created to help in World War 2.
1952 - Pilots and engineers in California discovered the area rule. It made
airplanes sleeker and faster without using a bigger engine.
1969 - Boeing came out with the 747. It was a huge jet that could seat many
more than the previous 10 people.
1990 - Engineers invented planes using non-metal materials that couldnt be
detected by radar. Shortly after that, stealth planes were created.

How has this product impacted

society in a positive way?

It can transport goods and people a lot

faster, and it saves us time. We can also get
goods and transport people from other
countries now a lot easier because of
airplanes. We also use planes for our air
forces to help defend our country.

How has this project impacted society in

a negative way?

Traveling by car is a lot less than traveling by

plane. Airlines dump massive amounts of
dangerous pollutants over our homes and into
our atmosphere every day. This great but largely
invisible harm will continue to grow at an
accelerating rate in the years to come. They are
inefficient, they are big, and they run on toxic
fuels.

Isnt it astonishing that these secrets have
been preserved for so many years, just so
we could discover them.
