Placement #1 Vestavia West
Monday September 1st
No class was held today due to the Labor Day Holiday.
Tuesday, September 2nd
Time
Activity
7:45
Arrival at Vestavia West
7:50
Meet teachers and students for the first time
8:00
Morning carpet time singing the good morning song, days of the week,
calendar, and reading Brown Bear Brown Bear to help with color
identification. I observed from outside the circle at this time.
8:45
Kindergarten students go to PE and first grade students have math time I
went to PE with the kindergarten students since my teacher was out of the
room and a substitute was taking over math games
9:15
Centers rotations for 1 hour. There are four 15 minute stations and some
children work two on one and others must work one on one. There is the
main teacher and two aids in the classroom with the teacher who help
facilitate different stations. The stations today were computers (Teach Town),
ABC games with the main teacher, color craft with the aids, and independent
play. I worked with students one on one at the craft table for two rotations
and kept individuals focused while they were on the computers for the other
two rotations.
10:15
PE with the first grade students in an inclusive setting. Today was Run Day
and the children did quite well following the crowd and running. Sometimes if
they got tired though they would just sit down in the middle of the track, so
we had to be sure that if they sat, we sat with them against the wall instead of
in the middle.
10:45
Lunch time with the first grade children in an inclusive setting. This was one
of my favorite times because the childrens personalities came out and most
of them were very happy during this time.
11:15
Short break
11:30
New set of centers in the classroom - It is a different version of what happens
in the morning but just different games and manipulatives with a few new
aids. I worked one on one with a student on color identification for 15
minutes then worked with another child on the computers to help keep him
focused.

him focused on the lesson. The morning circle time features the good morning
song, the days of the week song, and calendar time. My favorite activity
though is an interactive Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See game. The
teacher reads the book and each child places a different colored felt animal on
the ground to help tell the story and reemphasize animal and color names. It
would be a great game to use for many different levels.
Kindergarten students went to PE, but I stayed with Mrs. Bennett and
observed math games. I was able to see lots of different tools for the
promethean boards and the two first grade students responded very well to
the games. After about 5-10 minutes though, the children need new games
and stimulation otherwise they lose excitement.
Centers rotations began. I worked at craft time for two centers and then
worked at the computers for the next two centers. During the first center, one
of the children had an accident and it got all over the floor and her clothes.
One of the teachers took care of her, but at the same time another boy had a
meltdown where he had to be restrained. It was a lot going on at once, but it
was good for me to see that despite everything that was going on, the third
teacher was still trying her best to keep things calm and normal for the
children who were not affected by the incidents. It made me realize how
important routine and
Took one student to his general education classroom for inclusion in a specific
activity time. The student did have a hard time in the classroom and had to be
removed from the group. It was a bit scary but it was a great learning
experience to watch how well my teacher handled everything and how she
didnt try to do anything too quickly. We went back up to the classroom when
he was calmer.
Participated in physical education with the two first grade children. We had to
do lots of guiding and directing but they were quite happy during this time.
The students had lunchtime in the cafeteria with peers. This was a bit of a
down time but I mainly monitored behavior and made sure that the children
were staying on task.
Short break in the classroom where I was able to talk with Mrs. Bennett about
IEPs.
Worked individually with one student while he worked on Teach Town on the
computer. He had to be reminded to stay focused, but it was a great
opportunity for me to learn short commands that can be effective for children
with disabilities.

pictures to go along with it. The students loved singing the songs and seemed
to understand the book really well.
Kindergarten students went to PE, but I stayed in the classroom with the two
first grade students. We played math games on the Promethean Board so they
could work on identifying numbers. It was a good learning experience to work
with one student who really struggled, because it made me think about my
precise language that I should be using to help him.
Rotations began. I worked with one boy in the play center on animal matching
and animal sounds Then at the second rotation a boy hit himself and got a
bloody nose. While one of the teachers took care of him, I took over the craft
time for two rotations. The students worked on singing Twinkle Twinkle
Little star, writing their name, counting to three stars, and then gluing tin foil
pieces on the star cut outs to make them twinkle. It was a very fun craft that
incorporated several learning tasks. Finally for the last rotation, I worked one
on one with a little boy to help him cut out sight words and place the picture
of the sight word on the appropriate written version of the sight word. It was
a unique matching game that really required the student to think about his
sight words. I was so impressed with his ability to match the words and read
them aloud with help from the pictures!
Writing time with the kindergarten students. They were working on writing
their names, the letter L, and the letter F. At this time I did an initial
assessment for one boy on his name writing. I will be working with him for
the next few weeks on a pre/post test intervention for helping him learn to
write his name on his own.
Brain break time! The students gathered on the carpet and they were allowed
to watch two different stories that were animated and read aloud for them. At
this time my professor came by to check in and I was able to talk with her.
First grade went to PE. I worked with the kindergarten students on math
games. (Some were colors, some were number identification, and some were
sorting.)
Lunch time for kindergarten students. I walked with two students to help
them get their lunch from the line and sit down at the table.
Recess time for kindergarten students. This was a lot of fun for the kids, but it
was quite difficult to make sure you had your eyes on them at all times. The
teachers were not able to sit with the other teachers, but they had to walk
around and keep their eyes on specific children to make sure that they did not
run away or get hurt.
Afternoon centers began. Only some of the class was in the room, because
several children were going to their inclusive classroom for specials. I worked
one on one with a child to help him with sorting colors, and then I monitored
another child while he worked on Teach Town on the computer.

Morning carpet time. The teacher went over the calendar, days of the week,
the good morning song, and read the book Ba Ba Black Sheep to the students.
They then did a Velcro book of things that children can do at the park. The
kids always enjoy those types of activities and stories.
Kindergarten students went to PE. Taught a one on one lesson to a student on
sorting and identifying colors. We began with a song about colors, had a mini
lesson, he practiced on the iPad, and then he sorted colors into their proper
containers for an assessment. For closure he got to play on the iPad again as a
reward.
Math games with the students on the Promethean Board.
Rotations began. I worked with one individual on letter identification, then I
facilitated computer time on Teach Town, then I worked with one student on
sorting, and then with another student at the craft table.
Went with my teacher to an inclusion classroom where she worked one on
one with a student in his inclusion classroom. I did not participate much
during this time but it was a great time to learn and observe.
PE for first grade students. During this time I sat with one boy who refused to
participate and tried to get him active. The teacher worked with another
individual who was having a meltdown but she was still able to hand over
hand encourage him to participate in throwing the basketball.
Lunchtime for first grade students. Sat at lunch with three first grade students
and one of the aids while my teacher went to the room for her break.
Rotations began again. I monitored a child while he worked on Teach Town
and then for the second rotation I worked individually with a student on
sorting colors.

Morning carpet time. The students listened to the good morning song, color
song, days of the week song, and months of the year song. The teacher then
lead calendar time, counting, and read a short story to the students. It was
awesome to see that my teacher for daily class activity used one of the color
songs that I used in my lesson.
Worked one on one with a student on the Promethean board to work on
shapes and organizing shapes in the outline.
Centers rotations began. I worked one on one with students at the craft table
to help them organize their numbers and count to ten. During transitions
times, I helped log students onto their accounts if they were doing Teach
Town at the computers.
Worked with a student on writing his name and writing his letters.

coloring and tracing letters in his kindergarten classroom.
PE with the first grade students and Mrs. Bennett. I helped one student from
time to time just staying on task and following directions.
Lunchtime with first grade students. Helped students order lunch, take it to
the table, and then keep their areas clean.
Centers began again and I sat at a table and helped one student with putting
words into sentences. Then for the majority of the time I worked on testing
students with error free learning. They would be shown a shape or a color
and have to state the name, and I would record their answer. If they got the
answer incorrect, then they would simply have to repeat what I said to
hopefully reinforce the name of the shape or color.
Dismissal
Went back to school for an IEP meeting. The family was simply adding
physical therapy to a childs IEP, but it was interesting to see the process and
then work with my teacher to update the IEP in SETS.

matching game on the Promethean board.
Kindergarten students went to PE and the two first grade students remained
in the classroom to work on math. One student worked on sorting while the
other worked on counting using the Promethean board games.
Centers began. I administered the K-SEALS to one of the kindergarten
children.
I came back into the classroom and worked with one child at the play area,
worked on name writing with another child, worked on the letter L with
another child, and finally collected data for my teacher using error free
learning.
Went to the general education classroom with one student and he worked
with the alphabet arc and colored a sequence of apples.
PE with the first grade students. I tried to begin an adaptive behavior
implementation for one child in PE. He will play for a little bit, but then he sits
down for a significant amount of time. Today when he sat down, I showed him
a timer for 1 minute. He had one minute to catch his breath and then he had to
go back to playing with his friends. It worked fairly well, but he was still
persistent. I am working on adding modifications to improve this behavior.
Lunchtime with first grade students.
Centers began again. I worked one on one with a student to help him with
number sorting. Then, I worked one on one with a student as he formed
sentences and then worked on his craft reward.

Arrival and morning carpet time. The students listen to the good morning
song, the colors song, and the months of the year song. Then they review the
calendar and days of the week. After those activities were finished, each
student got a turn to sort shapes on the Promethean board.
Kindergarten students went to PE and I taught my second lesson for my
clinical assignments. I worked one on one with a student on addition. He was
having a very good day and it was encouraging to see him grasp the concept
of addition. They were very simple problems, he used manipulatives, and I
used verbal cues. Even though he did not speak much, he was able to
demonstrate how to add using the different colored dragons and he was able
to select the correct answer when given two different numbers to choose
from.
Centers began. I went to play with two students for 15 minutes and helped
them match different animals and we talked about what sounds the animals
make. Then, I worked with my cooperating teacher to collect data using error
free learning. I really enjoy collecting data because it is encouraging to see
progress that has been made for some students! Finally for the last 15
minutes I worked with a child on writing his name.
Inclusive classroom with one student in kindergarten. He worked on the
letter A and did more apple related activities.
PE with the first grade students.
Lunch with the first grade students. It is always a good time to take a
breather, but at the same time you have to remind your students to sit in their
chairs and use their manners. Its a very happy time though to see the
students relaxed.
Second round of rotations began in the classroom. I worked with one student
on the computer for Teach Town to keep him focused on his assignment. He
simply needed someone to sit behind him and keep him on task. Then, the last
15 minutes I worked with two children on sorting colors using different
manipulatives.

with a student on the iPad and we played a numbers game to work on
counting to 10.
Centers began. My teacher had to leave the room to be with a child who was
having a tough day. I was in the room with the two aids, so I lead the
individual lessons at the yellow table. Each child worked on their alphabet
arc, worked on the letter E worksheet, and then I assessed their knowledge of
colors, shapes, numbers and actions by using cards and error free learning. I
recorded the data for error free learning questions as well as recorded
information for behavior. It was a great experience learning how to collect
data and learning first hand the importance of colleting data.
Worked one on one with a child helping him write his name. We have been
working for several days now on the pre/post test. I am afraid he will not
accomplish writing his name by the end of the placement, but we can still try!
PE with the first grade students. I played/followed one student in particular
to make sure he stayed on task and stayed safe when he would run to a new
station. He was very happy today which made my task very enjoyable!
Lunch with the first grade students
Adaptive PE with all the special education students in the gym. It was really
fun to go back to PE and see all the different tools that were available for the
students to use. They had a wonderful time in a less crowded environment
and it was really fun for me to see how much they enjoyed their time.
Monitored one child as he worked on Teach Town on the computers. He must
be consistently reminded to stay in his seat, so I just sat behind him to keep
him focused and keep him company.

read a modified version of Goldilocks and the 3 bears. There were Velcro
pieces to make the book interactive and the children really seemed to enjoy it.
Two first grade students played math games on the Promethean board. My
job was to change games every few minutes once they completed the tasks so
that my teacher could work on setting up the centers that would begin next.
Centers rotations began. I spent the majority of the time at the IEP goals table
where my teacher would work with them on a mini-lesson that I got to
observe and then I was able to do some discrete errorless testing. I recorded
data on correct responses to colors, numbers, and actions.

worked on a Johnny Appleseed activity.

really proud of particular students who counted all the way to 25. That is
huge for my class! Then they read Goldilocks and the three bears again. They
werent as excited about that book, but it was still fun and interactive.
PE for the kindergarten students. I stayed in the classroom and facilitated
math games with two first grade students while my teacher got set up for
stations. It was good to learn how to balance two different needs and ability
levels at once.
Literature stations. Students went to computer, craft, play, and lesson. I spend
the entire hour at lesson and I worked on the mini lessons with the students.
Then if they finished early I would discrete errorless trials with them on
colors, action verbs, shapes, and numbers. I was able to do these lessons for
my teacher, because she had to go help with another classroom.
Writing with all students. They worked on the letter H this week.
PE with the first grade students. They played with balloons and my students
LOVED it! It was such a fun activity that was not too stimulating, and the
activity could easily be done independently. It was such a joy to see my
children so happy!
Lunch with the first grade students
Stations in the room again. I observed the teacher as she taught an IEP goal
lesson to one student. He has to work for 30 minutes straight, but several
portions of the lesson involve coloring, which are great motivators for him. He
did get angry and run away at one point, but I was able to see how to
appropriately handle that from my teacher. It was great learning from her!

Stations rotations. I stayed at the language arts table with my teacher for the
whole hour again. I got to observe her for a few lessons, then I got to teach the
lessons on my own when my teacher went to work with another student.
Writing center. The children started journals today. They had a picture of a
leaf and all they had to do was dictate a sentence. We would write the
sentence with yellow marker, then they could copy it with pencil if that was
developmentally appropriate.
PE outside on the playground with first grade students. The gym was being
used for picture day, so we got to go to the playground.
Lunch with the first grade students.
IEP lessons with one individual. A parent came into the classroom, so my
teacher talked with the parent. While that was happening, I worked one on
one with the student on math and language arts goals. It was a great learning
experience trying to keep him motivated and adapting the lesson as
necessary.
