Objective:
Students will:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship the characters have to
the text.
2. Demonstrate a full analysis of a character using comics/graphic novels
Procedures: (ZBL-Zombie Based Learning)
1. Introduction to character analysis
- Define character analysis
- Provide examples of character analysis
- Answer any questions the students have on character analysis
2. Hand out comics and graphic novels
- Students choose which one they are more interested in, they do not have to choose
both
3. Instruct students to analyze the various features of the comic or graphic novel, especially
taking notes on the characters
4. Instruct students to choose a character they are interested in and do a character analysis
on that specific character. Also see how the text effects this specific character.
- Provide examples and help guide the students
5. Group Collaboration

Allen 2

Two minutes before the class if finished, have students share their character analysis
to the class

Materials:

Comics
Graphic Novels
Examples

Assessments:
-

Analysis of comic/ graphic novel

Group collaboration (exit slip)

Differentiation: If needed, I will provide more examples of character analysis. I will also
accommodate to any of my students needs.
Technology Connection: Students are allowed to use iPad or computers to read on, if available.
Future Connections: Students can now apply character analysis to future texts.

WRITING LESSON PLAN

Rationale: Students will understand character analysis by creating a comic strip or short story
including a graphic.
Standards:
W.8.3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective
technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
a. Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and
introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds
naturally and logically.
b. Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection,
to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.
c. Use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to convey sequence,
signal shifts from one time frame or setting to another, and show the relationships
among experiences and events.
d. Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory
language to capture the action and convey experiences and events.
e. Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated experiences
or events
W.8.4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and
