Overall Goal of Lesson: Students will be able to categorize diptongos and hiatos by separating words
into syllables and learn new chapter vocabulary.
Teacher: Ashley Villegas

Instructional Objectives: By the end of this lesson students should be able to: separate words into
syllables and apply accent marks correctly; learn and use new chapter vocabulary.

Anticipatory Activity for Lesson:
Add visual representations of key vocabulary. Spanish
Bellringer: crossword puzzle on reflexive
translations when referring to materials in English, for verbs.
ESL students.

Time Allotted
90 minutes

Teacher Input/Lesson Activity:


1. Bellringer- Students will have a crossword puzzle on Reflexive verbs.
Based off of a previous lesson (10min).
2. Introduce diptongos y hiatos with PPT and guided practice. Students
have been learning grammar rules in Spanish and how to apply accent
marks. This lesson helps target putting words into syllables, which is
part of the accent mark process (15min).
3. While viewing the PPT, students will get into groups and do guided

practice with syllables (10min).


4. Words with friends game- Students will play this game similar to
scrabble. They will practice writing 1 syllable words, then 2 syllable
words etc. (10min). (if time allows)
5. Worksheet- Diptongo and hiato practice worksheet. They will have
a worksheet on categorizing words according to syllables and
grammar rules to apply accent marks (15min).
6. Introduce vocabulary for next reading with guided notes. Students will
have a sheet with a list of vocabulary and together they will find
definitions (20min)
7. Bingo game- Using vocabulary words to fill in their bingo cards, I will
call out definitions and students will have to match the vocabulary
word that goes with it (10min).
Modeling: PPT on how to separate words into syllables and apply accent marks.

Guided Practice: Giving examples of when to separate syllables and getting into groups to
do activities on separating syllables.
Independent Practice: Worksheet on diptongos and hiatos.
Lesson Closure: Bingo vocabulary game.
Assessment Methods/Strategies: Worksheet on diptongos and hiatos.
Resources (supplies, equipment, software, etc.): PowerPoint presentation, Spanish for native speaker
textbook Nuevas Vistas.
Reflection: It is necessary for students to have some prior knowledge applying accent marks and
grammar rules when writing in the target language.
