5E Lesson Plan

Teacher: Chris Hauss

Date: 2 Oct 2014
Subject / grade level: High School Biology
Materials:
Pin the organelle on the cell game
Textbooks
iPads/computers
Internet
Video of cell and organelles
List of organelles for students
NC SCOS Essential Standards
State:
2.3 (metabolism)
2.4 (cell resp.)
2.7 (genes)
National:
E.U.1 (systems and organization)
E.U.2 (models and explanation)
E.U.5 (form and Function)

Lesson objective(s):
Identify organelles of cells
Describe function of organelles
Predict effects of organelle damage or failure on an organism
Hypothesize how organelle structure relates to function
Draw connections between cells, organelles, and genetics

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

Using visual/kinesthetic methods in initial game
Using textbooks or internet resources for research
Having choice between individual work and group work
Having choice of presentation style (PowerPoint, reading from sheet, drawing, making a video, etc.)
I will be available to help students on an individual or group basis.

5E Lesson Plan
ENGAGEMENT

EXPLORATION

Guide research, answer questions, be a resource,

encourage thorough research

Emphasize important info, ask questions for

discussions, observe

Pose questions, choose groups, observe, facilitate

Observe flow and content of discussions and

presentations, then assess formally.

Consider and hypothesize about questions individually I choose

small groups for discussions whole class discussions
Questions:
Do all cells in an organism use organelles in the same ways/amount?
Do all cells in an organism need all the organelles?
Do all organisms need all these organelles?
Do all cells in an organism have the same number of organelles?
What do these organelles have to do with genetics (previous
lesson)?

EVALUATION

Each organelle is presented to class from student expert(s)

Class records info from presentations.
Discuss each organelle as a class:
What does organelle do?
What special structure(s) does it have?
Why does it look the way it does?
Is it directly part of a system using other organelles?

ELABORATION

Guide game, guide questions.

Let students choose organelle(s) to study based on interest (group or

individuals) and textbook and/or computers)
Create presentation in whatever form they choose.

EXPLANATION

Quick cell video, then interactive cell game

Students: What do these organelles do? Do all cells have these
organelles? Do all organisms have these organelles?

Students demonstrate knowledge through discussion and

presentations.

Assessments:
Formative (Informal): After having students complete each step, I will check their notes. I will also be
observing discussions and research processes.
At the beginning of each class in this lesson, I will ask the class to explain what we talked about the previous
day, and then we will review for the first few minutes of class while asking for any clarifications or questions.

5E Lesson Plan

Summative (formal):
I will prepare a short quiz of the concepts and vocab/definitions that were taught for a grade at the end of the
lesson. Multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer/essay might each be used to assess
understanding.
Anticipated misconceptions/ alternative conceptions:
There will be confusion about prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and also between plants and animals. Students may
also think cells use every organelle the exact the way and amount, and have a fixed number of organelles which
is constant between all cells.

Cell game is stored in classroom cabinets.
