BP oil spill
By Anders Ho

Who were the local communities and industries

affected? If the catch is decreased because of the
pollution, it would be difficult for people to trade
fishes, go fishing, boat trips, and etc. The
businesses will be damaged due to people not able to
go fishing and boat trips. The amount of catch has
been decreased and possibly poisoned, thus fish
cannot be eaten. This is another factor of an effect
to the business. Other local communities and
industries that are affected were the restaurants,
beaches, local residents, and associated health risks.
The local restaurants will find it difficult to import
fishes into their business, due to the sea, which was
polluted. The restaurants will need to find another
way to get their product, and it may cost more.
Therefore the restaurants will need to spend more
money into buying their products. People that work in
the beach will find it much harder to earn money,
due to the decrease in customers going to the beach
will be much less, because there wouldnt be a point
of going to the beach if there are pollution going on.
It is possible that the air might also be
contaminated due to the oil spill, due to the action
that has caused the animals would be dying, and
people wouldnt dare to go near the coastline.

What actually happened with the BP Oil spill?

The BP oil spill happened in the Gulf of Mexico,
20th April 2010. The BP explosion has killed 11
workers. With more than 200 million of gallons
of oil were spilled.
It happened when there was a malfunction that
has leaked over 200 million gallons of oil, which
left 17 workers injured and killed 11 workers
over the period of time.
The leak has taken over 3 months and used over
many different options to seal before BP has
finally closed.
How was the environment affected by this
disaster?
More than 200 million of gallons of oil were
spilled. It has affected fishermen due to their
catch has decreased. Amount of catch will be
decreased, because of the oil will destroy the
fishes. People wouldnt be able to go to beaches,
because of the oil exposure. Due to the polluted
environment by this disaster, people wouldnt be
able to go to restaurants near the coast, play in
the beach, go on boat trips and etc. The
effects of this would be the businesses of the
coastline. This is because less customers will go,
and if less customers will go, the less money
theyll be able to have. A total of 16,000 miles
of coastline has been infected including the
coast of Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida,
and Louisiana. Although in July, 2010, gushing
went well, but it may still affect the the living
areas of the locals.

How did this affect the whole region of the Gulf

of Mexico?
The business include fishing, boat trip, swimming,
sport events, and etc will not be able to run, due to
the pollution in the sea, it is possible that the water
is poisonous. The businesses around the coastline that
does all these sort of business will be affects,
because no customers will go and buy their
equipments. Food stores will find it hard to manage if
they sell a lot of fishes for their business.
Over 8,000 different animals species have found
dead over the past 6 months. With over 16,000 miles
of coastline has been found polluted. Between the
dates June 2011 - April 2013, nearly 10 million pounds
of oily residue was moved from Louisiana shorelines.
This impact has affected much for the locals living
there. Even though 10 million pounds of oily residue
was removed, there were much remained in more than
200 miles embedded in its marshlands. The cause and
effect of this was not able to grow anything, and
animals dying.

What have BP done since this

oil spill to demonstrate that they
are trying to become more
ethical?
BP tried to demonstrate that they
are trying to become more ethical
by repaying the damages they have
done. This includes paying for all
legitimate claims for damages
resulting from the incident, finding
new ways to extract oil, and
conducting a research for
alternative fuel resources. These
will help the locals by repaying the
damages that they have done, and
by preventing the likelihood of this
case happening again.

Globally, what impact did this disaster have?

With more than 200 million gallons of oil being spilt, the cause of losing so much oil would
have a global impact on whether where would the oil whod went to if it didnt spill? How long
would it take the underground to generate oil again? Impact disaster may have on could be
animal extinction due to the pollution, and causing long-term effects on the coastline.
Tourists were not able to visit the beaches as they may plan to make a family vacation to the
area. Because of the tourist attraction of the beaches is gone, the value of the beach would
be much less compared to other places, thus tourist attraction would not be their number one
priority due to the pollution. If this happens, it means that the impact will have on the people
working in the coastline will not earn as much money. Due to the fact that the government
has spent much to compensate the needs to clear off the oil spill pollution, the economy
effect on the US dollar will drop. The currency rate dropping will affect everyone using the
USD, because the money they had would be much less compared to before and people will
spend less, due to they have less money. There was a huge impact on the wildlife. With more
than 1,700 sea turtles found stranded between May 2010 - November 2012 compared to 240
found yearly. Up to 930 dolphins and whales were found stranded in February 2010 - April
2013.
Think about the issues of CSR, globalisation and the environment.
The effect on the environment that has caused this issue that has happened was the amount
of catch the fishermen will get. Business such as restaurants will be affected due to the
fishes theyd be selling and markets. The markets will have a huge impact, as less fish will be
in the market for sale. The less fish, the higher the price it may be when butchers buy it off
from the fishermen. Thus the higher the price it may be when customers are going to buy the
fish. The oil companies would be affected as the oil spill has polluted the sea. Due to the loss
of the 200 million gallons of oil, the company would have to drill more oil from the seabed.
The pollution will have caused many fishes to die; this will take a huge amount of time for
them to reproduce fishes again, thus the economy will go down. The economy will go down
because people may spend less and buy other products. If less people are buying fishes, the
economy will affect hugely on the fish market. Those who have lost much, the government has
created a $20 billion spill response fund due to the damaged that has caused to the BP oil
spill. BP has already spent $14 billion in clean-ups, which they tried to cover up the damages
they have done.

M3- Government interventions (World Health Organisation & United Nations) also Pressure
Groups (Greenpeace & Friends of the Earth) PASS
President Obama has ordered the federal government to delay the issuing of new offshore drilling
leases and to determine whether they will need other safety equipments that are needed. President
Obama made a speech for the oil spill which he stated that to stop the leak, and to help the people of
the Gulf of Mexico.
During the speech, President Obama assured that if the outcome of the federal government
authorized BP procedure is unsuccessful, a team will be built with the best scientist around the world
to help with the cause of the BP oil.

The Greenpeace campaign acts the way their name suggests, which is to defend the nature of the
world. They are committed to to prevent any climate change caused by burning oil, gas, and coal. They
confronted those who promote dirty source of energy, including nuclear power, promoting a clean
energy for the future.
Friends of Earth is another campaign that tries to help the cause that has happened such as the BP
oil spill. They try to find a credible alternatives to the problem, provide information and tools to help
people act, and they work over 200 plus local groups, adding onto another 70 friends of earth
international group.
Nationally, how did this affect the US Economy and the UK economy? (Think about the effects
of taking the 60bn from a UK business and using that to fix the problems in the US)
It is not the fault of the UK economy, but the BP spill. Due to the action that has caused, the effects
that will cause UK economy would be the lose of amount of huge amount of money due to their oil
businesses, and usage amount of the UK economy will need to deal with because of the loss of the oil
spill.
BP is responsible for the $40 billion in fines, and $16 billion due to the clean up. BP has lost much, as
they were charged $18 billion in September 4th, 2014. Due to all of the cost and more, they have lost
much.
