DP2: Unit 1 – Sensitivity to Color Name: _____________

Lesson: Color Glazing of your Grisaille Still Life Class: ______________

Project Objectives: Complete their DP1 still life grisaille painting with the following-
• Thorough knowledge of color theory made through an exploration of color theory in their
VVJs
• Correctly create color glazing layers for grisaille
• Create an expressive color layer for the still life
• Present the finished painting to the class and defend their color choice and application.

Project Materials: Journal, oil pastels, black pen, turpenoid, brushes, acrylic paint, matte
medium, grisaille still life painting from last semester

Main Project Directions:


1. Follow the written directions to complete your color theory visual notes. Use oil pastels
and turpenoid to blend the colors together.
2. Research a famous artist using the Art Talk book and decide on a color scheme that will
enhance your grisaille still life. Choose a color scheme.
3. Choose different areas of your painting to enhance and others to fade into the
background – what will be the focal point or emphasis of the still life? Use color to help
you show this.
4. Using the artwork by the famous artist you have chosen as a color scheme example,
present you painting to the class along with artwork. Make comparisons and defend your
color choice and technique.

Project Rubric:
20 points each**, 100 points total

Student Teacher
1. Did you thoroughly complete your color theory assignments? How
creative did you make your visual notes about color theory?
2. Did you correctly use color glazes to complete your grisaille still life
painting?
3. How well you use color theory to create an expressive painting?
4. In your class presentation of your painting, did you reference another
artist and explain why you chose your color scheme? Did completely
explain all of your color choices in a formal critique?
