Resources/Materials

1. The teacher will have the students come to the reading area and sit on the rug
for a read aloud.
2. The teacher will read U.S Symbols by Shelia Keenan.
3. While reading the book the teacher will ask: What do the stars on the
American flag represent? Where is the Statue of Liberty located? Who lives
in the White House? Can you name the presidents that are on Mount
Rushmore? Why is the U.S. Constitution important?
4. The teacher will ask the students to rate themselves using their fingers. The
students will hold up a number 1-4 on how confident they feel about their
knowledge of U.S. symbols.
5. After reading the book the students will go back to their seat to finish any
projects that belong in their U.S. symbols portfolio.
6. If students are already finish with their portfolio they will find a partner and
play the cootie catcher review game. The cootie catchers are already premade and folded for the students. As students who needed to work on their
portfolio finish they will do the same. ( find a partner and play cootie
catcher review game)
7. After all students have played the cootie catcher game for at least 10
minutes they will put away all of the cootie catchers and clear their desks.
8. Once all desks have been cleared of everything except a pencil the teacher will
pass out the United States symbols post-test.
9. As students finish their test they will turn them in and then read a book silently
at their desk until everyone has turned in their test.
10. Once all students have finished and turned in their test the teacher will have
the students stand at their seat to practice the National Anthem.
11. The teacher will play the music video with lyrics and everyone will sing the
song.
12. After singing the song one time the students will line up to go to the
auditorium.
13. The students will line up on stage in front of all of the other second grade
classes and the teacher will play the National Anthem for the students to sing.
14. After the performance the teacher and students will go back to the classroom
for a mini celebration of the United States and a job well done on their
performance.
