The Spanish Civil War took place between 1936 and 1939 caused by Spanish
General Francisco and his troops attacking to take over Spain. Groups worked with the
Spanish Republic to try to stop him and volunteers from other countries (International
Brigades) helped fight against Francisco even if it meant being against their own
countrys morals. General Francisco Franco got troops and supplies provided by
Germany and Italy while on the other side the Spanish Republic had the Soviet Union
sell them weapons. One of the most significant events was the bombing in Guernica
by the Germans which was supported by Hitlers Nazi regime. Throughout the 3 year
war it was estimated that half a million people died. On April 1, 1939 the Republican
troops gave up and Franco became ruler until his death in 1975.

LorcainNewYork

Federico del Sagrado Corazn de Jess Garca Lorca was a

spanish poet, dramatist, and a theatre director. During his adolescence he became
interested in both theatre and music rather than literature. Throughout the years, he
became very involved in Spains new and unusual experimental ideas in the arts. From
1925 to 1928 he became passionately involved with Dal. This caused a public outrage
due to its offense against morality. But soon after the success of Gypsy Ballads his
reputation increased and he lost interest in Dahl which he then continued on to an
affair with Emilio Soriano Aladrn. That affair ended up failing which left Lorca into
depression and questioning his own sexuality. He was trapped between himself as a
public successful author and his private inner self. Lorcas family sent him off to the
U.S. where he wouldnt have to face his problems. He enrolled in a university but
preferred writing or studying like always. He then wrote Bodas de Sangre and other
plays that rebelled against Spains middle class norms.
Lorca decided to go Granada where h`is family was 3 days before the war
started. He was arrested and was put in a jail cell where the next day, he was taken to
the hills and was executed by Fascist militiamen who thought their leader had ordered
them to kill him due to his homosexuality. He and three others who had fought
against Francisco to defend their country were buried where they fell.
Andalucia, Spain was where Franco originally transported his troops. He and his
forces, backed with the helped of German and Italian warships and planes, went down
the Mediterranean taking small villages with little or no resistance until they reached
Malago, a rural area of Andalucia who were supporters of the Republican government.
Everyone knew that the fall of Malago would be a moral blow on the Republican side
which would lead to a major victory. Plus, Malaga was a great example of the worst
conditions in Andalucia who also lacked resistances. The fall was caused when the
Republicans were out-manned, under supplied, and overly-divided.
