INTASC Standard, Description and Rationale

Standard #9 Professional Learning and Ethical Practice
The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate
his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners,
families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each
teacher.
Brief Description: For this assignment, I was instructed to interview two teachers face-to-face
and record their responses. I then, had to compare their responses and write about it.
Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard #9 Professional Learning and Ethical
Practice, I went to other teachers to learn how they teach and how it has affected their whole
lives. I then take their responses and apply them to the idea of how I will be a teacher and how I
will want to be seen by my students.

Intro:
Fishers High School, a high school of the Hamilton Southeaster school district in
Hamilton County of Indiana, employs many great teachers as the years go on. I chose to
interview two of the, in my opinion, best teachers Ive ever had there. Mrs. Sheri Dimos is an
ENL or English as a New Language teacher for grades nine and ten and has been teaching for
twenty-three years. Along with ENL, she also teachers a Preparation for College course for
grades ten and eleven. She felt as though God called her into the profession of instruction. Mr.
Daniel L. Smith however, decided to be an Algebra I and Geometry teacher. Teaching was not his
first career. He originally made a living though the restaurant industry and, it wasnt until he had
begun his family, which he realized the restaurant management was not the way to support his
family the way he wanted. He wanted to be just like all of those great teachers he had; he wanted
to be that guidance he had as a student, and thats exactly what he became to be.
Traits of an Effective Teacher:
No two people will have the exact same answer when asked what kind of traits an
effective teacher possesses. Smith responded right away with, That is a tough question. The list
could go on forever! but he narrowed it down to his top two: Patience and Compassion. To be a
teacher, one must be patient with his/her students because he/she will undoubtedly come across a
student who will struggle a little, so you must have that patience in order to let that student catch
up. Compassion is also a big deal in the teaching profession, because if you arent passionate
about what you do and what subject youre teaching, your students wont reach their full
potential.
Sheri also responded with her top two traits of being an effective teacher which are the
ability to relate, and your subject matter knowledge. Being able to relate is important because

you dont know what your student may be going through. They might have a hard home life, or
no home life, so it is your job, as a teacher, to be able to relate to how they may feel in school, or
even why they may do the things they do in school. Subject matter is also a great deal because
teachers who stand up in front of the class blabbering on about a subject they are unsure of.
School administrations dont hire people who got a degree in Science to teach an Art History
class.
Philosophies, Values, and Beliefs:
Mr. Smiths first belief towards the teaching profession were that teachers were just there
to teach. Over his eight years, he now believes that teachers are there to guide. Teachers are
meant to guide the students to where they want to be as opposed to just feeding them knowledge
and that was that. Mrs. Dimos philosophy remained generally the same throughout her twentythree years. She believed that every student is important and every student can learn. Her main
focus is always on the students and figuring out how theyll be able to understand.
The most important quality of a good teacher:
The answer to the most important quality a good teacher should have also varied. Dimos
said flexibility was the most important quality. Technology is always changing and the demand
from the state increases, and it is our job as teachers to be able to bend to the needs of new
advancements and new requirements. If not, Id be out of a job! Sheri Dimos explained.
However, Smith was convinced that the most important quality was the willingness to allow
students to be students. He defined that as, being able to let them come up with the ideas of the
lesson and not force-feeding them your single way of doing something, because my way of doing

it may be confusing to your students so you have to allow them to think of their own ways of
going about it.
Traits, Quality or Behaviors I possess:
As a student teacher, I would say I am very easy to relate to. Im in college, so Im still
getting the hang of everything and I still learn from teachers. I am not only patient, but I am
understanding. Many of my friends come to me to vent and I understand that no single person is
going through their problem alone. Whether it be someone else who is experiencing the same
exact situation, or it is a family member feeling the same way about their home situation.
Whatever the problem may be, I know that as a teacher, I must be able to listen, and relate. I
know that I am not always going to have the right answer and that is okay. The students are the
most important part of the teaching profession because without students, there are not teacher.
Conclusion:
Teachers are undoubtedly a big part of our lives. They are our guidance into the world.
They give us an insight on what is expected of us as we grow up. Unfortunately many students
look at teachers as the man and theyre only there to feed you information and lay down the
law, but they is not the case. They are not to be looked at as just the man or mentors. I like to
think of them as friends giving us all a nudge in the right direction. Teachers are people too and
all they want to do is help us succeed in life. Achieving our goals with their help means they
achieved their goals as well. Teachers do not define who we are, but they do define how we get
there.
