I am going to show a clip from the popular TV show that I am sure

most of you have watched at some point called South Park. The
clip will relay to you a perfect example of the most common way
that Jews are portrayed in media. It will also highlight the
harshness and crudeness in regards to the way that they are viewed.

My name is Spencer Young and I recently watched this show and
examined the different stereotypes that it gives to people of the
Jewish culture. I have also done research on the stereotypes that are
given to Jews by the people of todays society. Along with the
research done, I conducted two interviews with Bret Rodgers and
Caleb Kramer who have a direct relation to the Jewish culture. I
have chosen an artifact to research that has had a major impact on
the stereotypes of Jews and also one that is meet with much
controversy.
The TV show of South Park portrays stereotypes associated with
the Jewish culture in a negative way, which are not always true.
These stereotypes are formed out of complete biases with no
research or factual data present.
If I asked all of you to picture the stereotypical Jewish person in
your mind I am sure most of you would associated at least one of
the following characteristics being wealth, greed, large noses, curly
hair, social awkwardness, and poor hygiene. I want you all to
realize that you are not alone when it comes to stereotyping people,
it happens to all of us based on our perceptions of people that we
form from viewing them in the media.
I am in front of you today to deepen your understanding of how the
stereotypes of media are similar with society and how factual these
stereotypes are.

Body
Main Point One

The TV show of South Park portrays Jews in way that shows the

(One sentence)

stereotypes that are most common in the medias representation of

the Jewish culture.

Evidence (& cite it

here)

- A stereotype that is most common is the idea that all Jews have
big noses and are socially awkward individuals. This stereotype
was created due to the fact that large portions of Jews are educated
and this sense of being educated is often attributed with the nerd
characteristic. This stereotype is still seen in todays society with
this image being a common representation of the average Jew.

- Some more stereotypes that are associated with Jews include
greed and money conscious people. This stereotype was created
due to the fact that large portions of Jews develop promising
careers as bankers, stockbrokers, and other professions that are high
earning positions. Although these are well-respected occupations
this notion of greed is portrayed to the extent that it perceived Jew
in an evil and morbid way.

Now that we have looked at negative stereotypes, lets take a look at the validity of these
stereotypes.

Main Point Two

(One sentence)

Many of Jewish stereotypes are completely untrue in the cases of

Jewish people associated with the act of being greed, wealthy, and
money crazed individuals.

Evidence (& cite it

here)

The most common negative stereotype that is associated with Jews

is that they are depicted as greedy and money crazed. Most people
believe this stereotype to be true due to the longevity of it. This
stereotype was actually developed during World War II. This time
period was when both Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust were both
flourishing in Germany. The stereotype of Jews having this money
crazed mentality was formed out of the jealously that Germans had
towards people of Jewish decent who had a greater wealth
accumulation and economic standing then them. Although AntiSemitism to this extreme extent is not seen today, it is still there
with underlying attitudes and stereotypes towards the Jewish
culture.

Another big stereotype that is that all Jews are wealthy. This
stereotype is highlighting the fact that a large amount of Jewish
people are high earning professionals and they have no social lives
other than work, which are both not true. Jewish people have a
variety of jobs other than high earning professions such as lawyers
and stockbrokers. This notion of Jews being secured to a few
certain professions is ridiculous and the same as delegating all black
people to the jobs as gangsters or rappers. In the book of Jews and
Money it is written that actually over 700,00 American Jews live
below the poverty line and the most American business leaders are
not Jewish. This fact is not portrayed in the media as it unknown to
most people that Jews can have jobs as trainers or public speakers
because of this common stereotype being ingrained in societies
mind.

Conclusion
Signal The End

Reviewing all of these stereotypes gives insight on to how these

stereotypes are seen in media today. All stereotypes that are created
cause the world to show ignorance and a disregard for basic human
values.
Summarize Main Points The stereotypes that are forced on the Jewish community affect the
lives of them everyday. They are formed with no valid research or
fact and cause suffering on a person that is unimaginable.
Restate Focus/Purpose

It can be back up by fact on how Jews are not all greedy, wealthy,
and have big noses, but these are still seen everyday in society. By
having all the methods of media being political cartoons, news
articles, movies, and TV depict these stereotypes everyday; it directly
and indirectly causes a negative perception of Jew, which has been
ingrained in the brains of societal members.

End With Impact

After you listen to my speech, I want you all to look into yourself and
think if any of these stereotypes that you have were developed from
the media with no actual evidence of the stereotypes being true. I
hope my speech has loosened your dependence on the medias
representation of people and caused you to evaluate how you see
other cultures.
