Lesson Plan

ELL 206
PREPARATION

Name: Dara Belohlavek

Course: Science

Topic (Unit): Environment/Ecology

Lesson: 4th grade

Big Idea Expression: Plant Parts and Processes

Standards:
3.1.2.A5: Explain how different parts of a plant work together to make the organism function.
3.1.3.A1: Describe characteristics of living things that help to identify and classify them.
ELP.4.S.1-3.1.1: Identify and sort parts that make up a system (such as: leaf/roots to tree)

working with a partner

Objectives:

Given information on plants, the children will identify/explain various parts of a plant

and their functions and label each part of a picture of a plant with 80% accuracy.

Given white carnations, the children will be able to make an educated prediction of

what will happen when food coloring is added to the water.

Essential Questions: How does each part of a plant help it to survive?

How are plants useful for animals and people?

Materials/Resources: White carnations, containers, food coloring, plant diagram worksheet,

videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-foZudKIBk, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfTp1ObzNHM)

Vocabulary: Root (goes into ground to receive nutrients)

Stem (offers support and transfers nutrients)

Leaf (comes out of the stem that receives sunlight, photosynthesis)

Flower (produces fruit/seeds)

Photosynthesis (process that uses sunlight to produce food for the plant)

UDL Considerations

Level 1: The student should be able to repeat the parts after the teacher or point to the correct

parts on the worksheet with a partner if necessary.

Level 3: The student should verbally identify/explain the plant parts alongside a partner.

Level 5: The student should verbally explain relationship between plant parts from questions

alongside a partner.

PRESENTATION

Introduction: Upon student entrance the teacher will distribute a white carnation to each child

in order to peek their interest in the next lesson/experiment.

Instructional Strategies: Interactive lecture, experiment, independent practice, video

representation of information, plant parts song

After a few minutes, the class will discuss as a whole.

EVALUATION
Student Closure: Pair/Share: the teacher will ask the students to pair up with the person next to

them and share two things they learned from the lesson

Assessment: The students will fill out the plant parts worksheet and hand in to the teacher and
explain to a partner the process of the plants. ELL students may draw arrows on their
worksheet demonstrating the order of plant processes and may discuss with a partner who
speaks the same language if necessary. Teacher will assess knowledge by group work,
worksheets, and listening to conversations being had.
