Artifact Title: Notes for Teaching

Date: June 2013

Artifact Description:
This artifact contains lesson notes for one of the classes that I taught while in Fort Dix,
New Jersey. The class lasted for four hours. The lesson is part of a fifteen class series.
There were five other instructors total. We had about forty students. At the end of the
class series, the students took a written test. If they passed the test, they would be
certified as a Field Sanitation Team Member for their unit.
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This experience best aligns with Standard 7: Instructional Planning- The teacher
organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter,
pupils, the community, and curriculum goals.
This artifact best aligns with standard seven because I had to make sure the material I
was teaching was relevant and would ultimately provide the information to pass the
certification exam. I had to take into account that most the students were running on
little to no sleep. While I used projector and PowerPoint to teach, we also took frequent
trips outside to demonstrate key concepts in design and help keep everyone awake. I
also asked a lot of questions about their experience with the subject and attempted to
relate the students prior experiences with the curriculum goals. I believe that the
lesson can be open to adjustment based on the student responses and how fast they
were picking up the material.
I am more confident in this standard because I had to organize and plan systematic
instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and
curriculum goals while teaching the FST course.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Alignment:
This experience best aligns KSD1.c: Selects Instructional Goals- The candidate can
establish clearly written goals that reflect the curriculum framework and standards, and
can articulate high expectations that permit viable methods of assessment and account
for varying learning needs and styles, and prior knowledge.
This experience, as an instructor, best aligns with this KSD because I had to include
clear lesson objectives to help guide the class. After this experience, I have more
confidence in guiding the lesson to instill key points in the instruction. I had the
opportunity to learn from my fellow instructors as well as my students, helping me grow
into a better more competent teacher.

I am more competent after this experience because I had to establish clear goals and
reflect the curriculum framework and standards, and articulate high expectations for the
required test at the end of the lesson.
Secondary KSDs:
KSD1.d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources
KSD3.e: Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness
What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience:
From being an instructor and teaching other soldiers, I have learned so many new
things about preparing for lessons. I learned how to more effectively quote my
resources because my boss was standing in the back of the room and asking questions
throughout the class period. I learned how to effectively state my main points of
instruction.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this
experience:
Throughout this experience, I discovered that, as a teacher, I will be able to convey
important ideas that my students can then build their knowledge. I have learned how to
transition from different instructional methods to help keep the students engaged in the
classroom environment. I have learned that I can and will be a confident teacher.
