CAD Practice: Revolve, Fillet and Pattern

Introduction
In order to effectively use a CAD program to create 3D models of a part, a designer
must be familiar with the basic tools, such as revolve, fillet and pattern. This activity
will help you understand the sketching tools that are common to most CAD
programs and gain experience creating simple 3D models.

Equipment

Computer with 3D CAD solid modeling program

Procedure
Follow the instructions to create 3D solid models of each of the following objects
using the specified method(s). Change the project path to the folder of example
projects.
Example 5
1.

We are practicing the revolve, fillet and pattern tools in

this first model, so even though there may be another
way to make this model, please follow the directions.

2.

Make a sketch of a rectangle that is .25 in by .5 in that

is centered on the y-axis and is
.125 above the origin.
On the same sketch, place a line
on the x-axis that is partly on the
left side of the y-axis and partly on
the right side. It
doesnt matter how long it is.
It should look like this:
Finish the sketch.

3.

Revolve: Use the revolve tool by first selecting it, make

sure the Profile icon is selected, then choose the
rectangle you just created. Choose the axis icon and
select the line that you drew on the x-axis. Your figure
will revolve around this axis. Select ok to complete the
revolve.

4.

Fillet: Use the fillet tool by first selecting it, click on the
radius dimension and change it to .05. Then select, on
your drawing, the edges you want rounded, first the front
edge, then the back edge. Select ok to complete the fillet.

5.

Create a sketch on the flat side of the model. Place a

circle of diameter .125 in with the center on the y-axis
and .4 in above the center of the hole. Finish the sketch
and extrude a hole, using the circle you just created.

6.

7.

5
Pattern: Select the Circular Pattern tool. Make sure the
Features icon is selected and select the hole on the
model you just created. Then select the rotational axis
icon and select the center, larger hole. Change the
Placement number to 8. Select ok to complete the
pattern.
Save as example 5.

Example 6
1. Make a rectangular sketch 1.25 by .75 inches. While in sketch mode, fillet the
left two corners. Select the fillet tool, change the measurement to .125 in,
select the top edge of the rectangle, then select the left side. This puts a .125
in fillet in the top left corner. Do the same for the bottom left corner. Finish
the sketch.

2. Extrude the sketch back .4 in. (figure 1) Open the Extrusion folder and right
click on the sketch icon. Select share sketch. Double click on the sketch
icon to reopen the sketch environment. Place a .1 inch diameter circle on the
sketch .125 in from the right side and even with the center of the top fillet.
(figure 2) Extrude the circle on the sketch to cut a hole all the way through the
model. Right click on the sketch icon and turn the visibility off. (figure 3)

3. Pattern: Select the Rectangular pattern tool. Select the features icon and
select the circle/hole on the model. Select the arrow by Direction 1 and
select the right side of the 3D model. If the green arrow appears going the
wrong direction, select the up/down arrows to reverse them. Change the
number of patterns to 3
and the spacing to .4.
Select the arrow by
Direction 2 and select
the top of the 3D model.
Again, change the
direction of the green
arrow by selecting the
up/down arrows. Change
the number of the
patterns to 4 and the
spacing to .15. Select
ok to complete the pattern.
4. Save as Example 6.

Example 7
1. Create this sketch and revolve it about the line. After revolving it, fillet the
bottom outside edge .125 in.

2. Save as Example 7.

Example 8

1. Create this model. You will use Revolve and Fillet. Hint: Only make one of
the geometries, either top or bottom, of the cross section and revolve that
geometry all the way around. Save as Example 8.
