Discuss the limitations of and controversy surrounding tough

love programs for juvenile offenders. Include a specific example
from the reading.
2. Why did boot camps as a sanction for juvenile offenders initially
appeal to both republicans and liberals? What events regarding
boot camps changed the opinion of some?
3. What is WWASP, and why is it discussed in an article on tough-love
approaches for juvenile offenders.
4. Discuss the arguments both in support of and against the use of life
sentences for juvenile offenders? Include specific examples to support
your argument from material from last week or this week.
5. Should a life sentence juvenile offenders be restricted to murder
cases? Support your answer with argument and an example.
6. Who is TJ Lane? What did he do and what was his sentence?
7. Do you think his sentence was fair? Is he a juvenile the death
penalty should be available for? Is he a juvenile who was so young
when he committed the offense that life without parole is too harsh a
sentence and he too should be given the opportunity to reform.
Support your answer with fact about him and his case.
8. Describe how gangs work at Harper High. Your answer should
include but is not limited to how one becomes a member of a gang,
what the staff at the school are doing about gangs, finally, why do
gang members get shot? Your answer should be at least a paragraph
long.
9. At Harper High are there any people who are not in gangs? Is this
prevalent? What are the consequences for not being in a gang? Do
you think most juveniles would believe that those consequences are an
acceptable price to pay to not be in a gang?
1. Tough love programs have certain limitation. They are not effective at things such as
drug wars. Other treatments are needed for those crimes. Some private centers are
covered by health insurance which makes sure the kid helped with and medical
problems. Abuse is reported over and over when dealing with the tough love
programs. This caused controversy, such as when a kid dies. Some say that it
shouldnt be shut down, while other look at the big picture and notice dozens of
deaths. When it comes to abuse so see it as helping the kid by breaking him down
but in the end jail is just as effective as stated.

2.These boot camp originally appealed to both political parties do to the media.
The media was showing evidence that kids with all types of problems such as drugs
were help/ fixed. The media was not reporting the negative information such as the
abuse and the number of kids that were not fixed.Investigations of these camps started
to chafe the opinion. They started to find out that kids were dieting due to abuse, that it
was no better than a jail at fixing the kids, and that overall it is ineffective on crimes such
ad the drug war.
3.WWASP stand for World Wide Association of Specialty Programs. It is one of the
largest tough love schools. It used many tactics from the Synanon, such as their
ideology and languages that are conveyed to teens. It is discussed in the article
because it is one the boot camps in the world. It has branches all over the world that
ware continuing to get investigations about abuse yet the program is still running. The
Programs are able to donate money to political parties to keep from being shut down
and that is what the WWASP did.
4. Some say the person is old enough to know right from wrong. At a certain age you
know you are not suppose to kill anyone but they chose to anyway. The other argument
the make is that the recidivism rate is high so they are more than likely to commit a
similar crime again due to when released they will be put in the same location they
committed the crime the first time. Leading them to the life of crime again. On the other
hand people argue that a child is to young to go to jail for the rest of their. life. Most
believe that they do deserve punishment but leaner their lesson and wont do the crime
again. They realized the consequences and know they are better than that and know the
life they want to live is one with with out crime.
5. Yes I think it should be restricted to Juveniles. You never now really if he will commit
the crime again. I think the crime should be serious enough that the juvenile knows what
he did but should get a second chance. Now when it comes to murder they should get
life, but with the chance of parole. The reason for this is because I believe they know it
was wrong went they committed the murder but many people like 14 yr. old Timothy
deserves to be released after a certain time due to his age and involvement. Where as
the other two kids should stay a lot longer. They knew the crime was wrong, but if under
18 they should deserves a second chance because they might be rehabilitated. And if
they are they should live like the rest of us. Punishment should be only enough to make
the realize they did something wrong and should pay for it and prevent them from

committing more crimes.

6.T.J. Lane was a 17 yr. old that went into Chardon High School on February 27, 2012,
shot and kill three student while injuring 3 more. Lane was a troubled kid that was at an
alternate school. The victims were apparently ones he knew and were all at the same
table. On March 19, 2013 T.J. lane received three counts of life sentences.
7. I believe the penalty he got was fair but I would consider this type of case as an
exception to allow death penalty for a juvenile. Lane did not just shoot one kid, he shot
six. Before he even walked into the school he should have known not to to do it but he
continued to. After seeing the result of shooting the first kid he should have felt
something but he continued to shoot the others as well. This type of case I think they
should first find the reason behind it to prevent more. He took the kids from their
parents. This effects more than just the kids it effected everyone in the school and all the
families. And after walking into the court room wearing the shirt he wore, saying the
things he said and giving the middle finger it shows he thought it was funny. I think being
17 he is old enough to get the death penalty punishment. He is a year shy of being
considered an adult, if he was younger such as 15 then maybe he would be too young
but at 17, he is old enough to get the punishment he got. I think that with him turning 18
in about 6 months after the shooting the sentencing was fair but could also be punished
with the death penalty.
8. Gangs as Harper High work by first you are put in a gang based on the block that you
live in. You have no choice of what gang you want to be in if in one at all. These
members get shot for all types of reasons whether big or small if any reason at all. This
reasons include walking into the wrong territory, fighting with some one, arguments
about what you said, walking alone, being outside, and walking in a group because you
look like a gang. Staff members at the school are trying to get involved with they
students by asking them to come to the staff before any thing happens as well as
offering rides for the students. Students walk in the middle of the street to feel safe and
walk in groups so they dont get jumped but at the same time dont walk together so they
dont get shot. I area you live in controls your life so much the only way to get out of the
gang is to move. Students often stay at school as long as they can and then stay in their
house after that.
9.There was mention of one kid At harper High who was not in a gang and others come
to talk and pray with him. This is not very prevalent, other kids come to try and keep

from being involved in the gangs. The consequences of not being in a gang is that you
have no friends, you stay in your house and dont go outside other than to school. No I
do not think most juveniles believe that those consequences are an acceptable price to
pay that is why most of them are involved in the gangs they are in.
