A packed bed of spherical solid particles of density 2000 kg/m3 occupies a cylindrical
column with diameter of 0.5 m and at a depth of 0.7 m. The mass of solids in the bed
is 50 kg with mean particle diameter of 250 m.. A gas of density 1.2kg/m 3 and
viscosity 1.8x10-5 Pa.s flows upwards through the bed.
Determine:
a) the pressure drop across the bed at the flow rate of 80 m3/h
b) the velocity needed for the packed bed to fluidize. State all your assumptions.
c) the group of this powder by using geldart specification and with an aid of a
pressure drop - velocity diagram, explain the fluidization behavior of this powder.
d) A second inert powder ( particle = 2500kg/m3, dparticle = 100 m ) has been added
to this powder to ease fluidization but at the end of the operation, this inert powder
has to be separated from the mixture. Explain separation process that will be
used.

2. A 1000 kg bed catalyst having cylindrical shape of diameter 40 micron and length of
10 micron is fluidized with an aid of vibrating by a fluidizing gas with density and
viscosity of 0.61 kg/m3 and 2.95x10-5 N.s/m2 respectively. The depth of the packed
bed is 2.5 m and its diameter is 1 m. At minimum fluidization velocity, it was observed
that the bed height increases 20% from the original height. If the settled bed voidage
is 0.50, determine:
Given:
a. The theoretical pressure drop at minimum fluidization velocity
b. the minimum fluidization velocity of the system by using Ergun equation and
taking dsv into consideration
c) If flowrate of 0.196 m3/s has been introduced into this fluidized bed, what is
the amount of material that will be entrained from this equipment?

3 A packed bed of solid particles of density 2600 kg/m3 occupies a cylindrical column with
diameter of 0.2 m and at a depth of 0.5 m. The mass of solids in the bed is 26 kg with
mean particle diameter of 300 m and size range between 275 m to 425 m. A gas
of density 1.2 kg/m3 and viscosity 1.8x10-5 Pa.s flows upwards through the bed.
Determine:
a) the pressure drop across the bed at the flow rate of 4 m3/h
b) the velocity needed for the packed bed to fluidize
c)
If the velocity is increased to 200% more than the minimum fluidization velocity, Umf,
d)
e)

predict the types of flow in the vessel i.e laminar or turbulent and state all
the assumptions made
f) determine the size range of particles that will entrained and separated from
the vessel and
