Given the websites, TSW illustrate by using a Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences
between two bodies of water with a score of six out of eight on the rubric.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the similarities and differences by creating a Venn
diagram.
Academic Language is not address in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN science standard 7.
We will use a Venn diagram in the future to show the similarities and differences between two topics
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covers in this course and are not part of this
particular lesson.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: Begin by asking the students to name different types of bodies of water. Ask them by
what makes a body of water fresh water and salt water. Explain what a Venn diagram is and how to use
it to show the similarities and differences between two things.
Procedures:
Prior to the Computer (15 minutes)
Teachers Procedures:
1. After the Introduction, distribute the
questionnaire to students.
2. Have the students fill it out to the best of their
knowledge

Student Procedures:
1. Students will look over the questionnaire before
they start
2. Students will fill out the questionnaire to the
best of their knowledge.

3. Go over the questionnaire when everyone is

done

3. Students will answer the questions out loud

when everyone is done.

At the Computer (15 minutes)

Teacher Procedures:

Student Procedures:

1. Have the students open MS word and an Internet

browser

1.Open MS word and an Internet browser

2.Direct students to different websites about bodies

of water

2.Go to different websites about bodies of water

3.Have them write down facts about different

bodies of water

3.Write down facts about different bodies of water

4.Have them create a Venn diagram in MS word

and have them pick two different bodies of water

4. Create a Venn diagram in MS word by clicking

on insert and clicking on shapes.

5.Monitor and assist when needed

5. Click on the oval shape and create it in the

document. Do this for a second oval shape. Have
the two oval shapes intersect in the middle.
6. Write the word difference above both circles and
write the word similar above where the circles
intersect.
7. Pick two bodies of water and type the
differences and similarities between them.

After the Computer (15 minutes)

Teacher Procedures:
1.Have students print out their diagrams when done

Student Procedures:
1. Print out diagram when done

Closure: Students will volunteer to share what they have learned about the different types of bodies
water. At the end of class, the teacher collects the Venn diagrams and questionnaire.
