The First International Conference on Water Resources of Al Jabal Al Akhdar : Reality and Prospective / 05-07 June / 2012.

An Analytical Study of the Economics of Supplemental Irrigation of

Grain Crops in Aljabal Alakhdar Region Libya
Gomaa Abdel Salam Afhima and Ali Khalifa Abdul Salam
Abstract: This study aimed to identify the different techniques to harvest rainwater and runoff and
benefit from them, the study assumes that water harvesting contributes to reduce the water deficit in
the region , reduce the burden on groundwater and increasing efficiency of agricultural production
through using harvested water in supplementary irrigation for the most important cereal crops in the
region through designing a model for supplemental irrigation within the most rainy areas in Aljabal
Alakhdar region in Mssa / Shahat in which annual rainfall ranges between 450-600 mm / year. The
survey shows that the expected fixed costs for supplemental irrigation amounted to 269 dinars per
hectare for each of wheat and barley crops while the variable costs expected for supplemental
irrigation of hectares of wheat were 1329.54 dinars and for barley crop 44. 1172 dinars. There is a
possibility of increasing the productivity per hectare for both crops from 0.8 tons / ha to 4 t / ha and
4.2 t / ha for barley and wheat, respectively. Results show that the expected net income of one hectare
wheat reached 2312.5 dinars with supplementary irrigation, while net income expected from one
hectare barley reached 1035.68 dinars according to prices of the agricultural season of 2008 ,when
the prices of wheat and barley were 800 and 500 dinars per ton , respectively .It is evidenced by
indicators of economic efficiency that the expected return on the dinar invested in wheat crop
amounted to 1.45 dinars while the expected return on the dinar invested in barley crop is 0.72 dinars.
Data of the proposed model for the supplemental irrigation, which aims to maximize profits and
minimize costs, was analyzed using linear programming through the computer. The highest values of
the net proceeds amounted 8481823 dinars for the total target area, which amounted to an area of
4.000 ha. Wheat crop irrigated with supplementary irrigation is chosen as the optimal solution of the
activities offered for selection and presented in a matrix of linear programming.
