Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction
1. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to,
taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by
using objects, drawing, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Writing Standards K-5
Research to Build and Present Knowledge
8. With guidance and support from adult, recall information from experiences or gather information
from provided sources to answer a question.
Language Standards K-5
Conventions of Standard English
1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or
speaking.
I. Description of Content & Content Type (Fact, Procedure, Concept, Principle):
Students manipulate objects (fish cut-outs) to relate counting to solve subtraction word problems.
(Concept)
II. Learning Outcome:
The student will to solve subtraction problems using manipulatives and will write an equation using the
symbols of subtraction and equal value.
III. Curriculum Connection (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence):
Yesterdays lesson was on solving addition word problems within 0-20. Todays lesson is using
subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. Tomorrows lesson will apply different strategies to
add within 20.
IV. Instruction
A. Engagement (Motivational Activity): Teacher will by ask the students, "Who can tell me
what we have on poster one?" (Pond with fish) Have you ever seen a fish swimming in the
water?" Tell me what you know about fish? Where do fish live? Teacher will read a story,
Ten Little Fish, by Audrey Wood. The teacher will ask the students to pay attention to the
number of fish being taken one by one. Then the teacher will point to poster two. Teacher will
ask students, Who can tell me what we have on poster two? (vocabulary words and symbols)
B. Instructional Sequence (Teaching Methodology):
Step #1: Sharing ideas with each partner
a. Discuss with your partner, What does the word take away/left over mean?
b. Teacher listens to studens' responses.
Step #2: Counting
a. (Teacher passes out a bag of fish and fish mat.) Who can tell me, How many fish we have
in the bag? Write your response on the whiteboard.

b. Teacher walks around the classroom to check students' responses on the whiteboard.
Step #3: How many are left over?
a. In pairs, show fifteen fish in the pond. Who can tell me how many fish we have left if eight
fish swim away? Show your partner and discuss with your partner how many fish are left and
write on the whiteboard.
b. Students hold up their whiteboard when they are done.
Counting and Recording Data.
a. The teacher asks the students to put the fish back in the pond. Who can tell me how many
green fish are in the pond. Tell me how many fish are blue. Who can tell me how many green
fish swam away? Write on the white board and show your partner how you got the answer.
b. Teacher listens and observes while students are collaborating with their partner.
Step #4:

Step #5: Write a problem representing data.

a. Show me how to write this problem as an equation using the right subtraction symbols.
b. Teacher walks around the classroom to monitor what strategies the students first use.
Step #6: Formative Assessment - Application Task
a. Teacher will provide a subtraction worksheet for the students.
b. Teacher will monitor students as they do the worksheet.
C. Application Task: (See Step#6)
Students will work on a subtraction worksheet.
D. Materials & Resources:
Ten Little Fish by Audrey Woods
Vocabulary wall poster
Fish poster and fish cutouts
Fish mat
White board

Assessment Strategies:

Formative: See Step #6

Summative: Students write vocabulary words in their Math Journal which we covered in the lesson
and provide two examples (Show with illustrations).

VI. Accommodations for Individual Learners:

Teacher will draw on differentiated instruction to meet the needs of individual learners.
Use visual aids and manipulatives for those students who are hands-on learners.
Work in pairs of two
Write in their Math Journal
I-Pads, computers, and video
1-1 asssistance
VII. Homework: Students will be given a subtraction worksheet.
