Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):

A. The third grade students will be able to define the different types
Instructional Materials
A. Vocabulary posters for the word wall
B. Video (simple machines)
C. Simple Machine worksheet
D. Search game (brainpop jr.)
E. Markers
F. Ruler
G. Popsicle sticks
H. Rubber bands
I. Marshmallows
J. Plastic spoon
K. Quiz (brainpop jr.)

Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of

additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1) Fine motor skills
2) Gross motor skills
3) Knowledge of different types of simple machines.
B. Key Vocabulary
1) Simple machines A tool that uses force to make work easier
2) Pulley Made of rope and string wound around a reel to change the
direction of a force.
3) Wheel & Axel A wheel that turns on a post to help move things
quickly and easily.

4) Wedge Two Inclined planes together used to raise an object or split

an object
5) Lever Made of a board or bar on top of a fulcrum. It is used to lift
weight.
6) Fulcrum The support on which a lever moves when it is used to lift
something.
C. Big Idea
1) What are the types of simple machines and how do you use them in
the real word?
D. Additional Content
IV.

Implementation
A. Introduction
1) To introduce the topic, the teacher will show them a video.
http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/forces/simplemachines/
2) The teacher will handout the simple machine worksheet to the
students.
3) The students will draw and label a simple machine.
4) The students will then tell their neighbor why they picked the simple
machine and describe it.
B. Development
1) The teacher will begin by going over the vocabulary word on the
word wall
a) The word wall is where the teacher will have vocabulary words
on a poster. They will be hanging on the board for the students
to see.
2) The students will pick a vocabulary word and they will have to say
the definition.
3) The students will check their definition by flipping over the poster
and the definition is on the back.
4) The teacher will challenge the students to play the search game on
brain pop.
5) The Students will be able to find simple machines hidden in pictures.
6) The students will be to see the simple machines used in every day
life.
7) The teacher will explain to the students how simple machines make
our lives easier by allowing us to use less energy and force to do
work.
8) The teacher will go over how the lever involves moving a load
around a fulcrum.
9) The teacher will explain to the class that they are going to make their
own lever and test it.
10) The teacher will hand out different materials that they can make a
lever out of.
11) The students will draw and label out their plan for the levers in their
science journals.

12) After the students are done making their own lever the teachers will
give them marshmallows to test their lever.
13) The goal for the students is to shoot the marshmallows into the cup.
14) When the students are done with the experiment the teacher will ask
the students questions.
a) Does the amount of force you apply affect the distance your
marshmallow goes?
b) If you threw the marshmallow yourself would you have a
greater distance then the lever?
C. Closure
1) The teacher will ask they students to write a paragraph in their
science journals about what they have learned today.
2) The students will discuss with the class what they wrote in their
science journals
3) The teacher will end with a quiz on the smart board, which will be
taken as a class.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1) For T.J. with autism we will give him warnings and preparation
when changes are anticipated.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1) Formative
a) The teacher will collect the simple machines drawings and
review science journals.
2) Summative
a) There is no summative assessment
V.

Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives
(Reflection on student performance written after lesson is taught,
includes remediation for students who fail to meet acceptable
level of achievement)
Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught.
Reflective answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
1) Were the students engaged in the simple machines hunt?

2) Was the chart an accurate way to assess knowledge? Was it too

easy? Was it too hard?

3) Was the quiz a good way to see if they students were getting the
concept of simple machines?
