Human Biology
Relationships are the connections and associations between properties, objects, people
and ideasincluding the human communitys connections with the world in which we
live. Any change in relationship brings consequencessome of which may occur on a
small scale, while others may be far reaching, aecting large networks and systems such
as human societies and the planetary ecosystem.

lives of humans for the better.

Teacher Task Overview

What do
you have
to do?

In the past several weeks, you have completed research on six

body systems. Through this, you may have read about many
problems that can affect our bodies in different ways. Your task is to
choose one injury or medical disorder and educate the public about
it. There are two parts to this culminating project:

"

Part 1: An oral presentation will be in a form of your choice (power

point/keynote, podcast, song, skit etc.) You may choose more than
one method. Your presentation should be about 3 minutes in length.
All students must have an active role in their presentation.

"

Part 2: You need to create an informational method to help inform

and educate the public about your chosen topic. This method
should alert the public to what this injury or medical disorder
involves and how technology can help. You may want to include
visuals to highlight what is important.

"

You may use a topic we have brainstormed in class, or you may

choose your own. You may chose to work alone or with a partner.
Once you, or you and your partner, have decided what you want to
investigate, get approval from Ms. Richards. If you have any
questions about the assignment, please see Ms Richards.

"

Steps:
1. Do some research, compile a list of ideas and choose one.
2. Pick a partner or decide to work alone.
3. Research your chosen injury or medical condition. Make sure
you are gathering the correct information (see page with step-bystep directions)
4. What form of technology can assist a person with this injury or
medical condition?
5. What Ethical Dimension can you attach to your technology?
6. Is this technology available worldwide?
7. Plan out your presentation.
8. Draft your presentation.
9. Practice your presentation and compare it to the rubrics.
10. Continue editing and practicing your presentation.

How will
you be
assessed?

You will be assessed on Criteria D in this task. Please see

the attached rubrics for more details.

When is
the task
due?

Assigned on: Wednesday, 26 November 2014 (6R),

Thursday, 27 November 2014 (6M & 6H)

Body Systems Presentation

Step-by-Step Directions for This Project

"

1. Do some research about injuries or medical conditions. Compile a list of injuries

or medical conditions plus the form of technology that can assist this injury/
medical condition and chose one that interests you. You may wish to focus on a
particular body system that interests you.

"

2. Pick a partner with the same injury/medical condition and form of technology as
you, or make a compromise with a partner about an injury/medical condition/
technology that you can both agree to work on. You may chose to work alone.

"
3.
"

"

Research your chosen injury or medical condition. Youre looking for:

What is the injury or medical condition?

What systems or organs does it affect?
How does it affect them?
How is it diagnosed?
How can it be prevented against?
What technologies are available and how effective are they?
Does everyone have access to this technology? Why/why not?

* For all of the above questions, you are addressing how Science interacts with life,
society and the world. See the Ethical Dimensions below.

"
4.
"
5.
"
6.
"

Plan out your presentation.

Draft and re-draft your presentation.
Check your presentation against the rubrics.

7. Practice, practice, practice. Check against the rubrics along the way, editing as
you go.

"

8. Presentation dates will be announced in class

Ethical Dimensions

Students reect on the ethical, social, economic, political, cultural and environmental implications of
using science to solve specic problems. Students develop a personal, ethical stance on sciencerelated issues.

"Cultural: Patterns of knowledge, behaviour, beliefs, shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that
characterise groups of people

"
Environmental: Circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded
"

Ethical: Process of rational inquiry to decide on issues as right or wrong, as applied to the people and
their actions

"
Moral: Principles of right or wrong behaviour derived from a particular society
"
Political: Relates to government or public aairs
"

Social: Interactions between groups of people involving issues such as welfare, safety, rights, justice
or class
