Dear Parents,
Exciting things are happening in our grade 5 class! Starting Monday, we will
begin the study of the Human Body. This material may seem tricky to students, but
we have a ton of fun and exciting ways to help our learning. We also want to keep
you, the parents, updated every step of the way, so heres whats happening:
What We Will Be Learning:
Throughout this topic, we will be looking at the basic structure and functions of the
human respiratory, digestive, circulatory, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.
We will also be looking at how these different body systems are interconnected. We
will look at how to identify the organs and their functions, in a human body system.
We will look at recognizing and creating illustrations of the human respiratory,
digestive, circulatory, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. We will also conduct
various experiments to safely measure and record the responses of the various
systems (e.g., heart rate, lung capacity, and reaction time) We will generate and
answer several questions to investigate how body systems are integrated (e.g., How
are the various systems connected to each other? Could one system live without the
other systems? If not, why not?) And demonstrate various ways in which body
systems work together. We will be using role-play, posters, and/or 3-D
representations. This might sound like a lot, but we are ready to learn! Below is a list
of what students will take away, and contribute to these lessons.
Students will:
Develop an understanding of the nature of science and technology.
Develop the skills required for scientific and technological inquiry.
Develop skills for solving problems and for communicating scientific ideas
and results.
Develop skills for working collaboratively.
And develop skills for making informed decisions.
What I Expect:
Participation: Students should participate in solo and group work to the best
of their ability.
Contributing: Students should contribute to class discussions, whether is be
by raising their hands and speaking aloud, or writing a note and putting it
into the Questions box at the back of the classroom.
Fun: And lastly, I want to see the students having FUN!
Behavior expectations:
Students are expected to show respect to Peers, equipment and to Me.
Students are to be kind and helpful to peers.

Students are expected to raise their hands when speaking out during lesson.
(I love to hear what the have to say, but calling out can take away from class
time, and we want to learn as much as possible!)

Materials: All required material will be provided in class.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated using the 1-4 Grading Scale.
Here it is:
4- I did more than was expected of me! (WOW!)
3- I did what was expected of me. (Good Job!)
2- I did most of what was expected of me. (Good Effort!)
1- I didnt do much of what was expected of me. (Try a little harder next time.)
How You Can Help:
You can help by talking to you child after school about what they are learning,
checking their agendas for homework, or dropping in before or after school to have
a look at our classroom displays

Please fill out the attached sheet and have your child return it to me.
