I. The adjective

* Adjective word order


Adjectives used together usually occur in the following order:
Opinion

Size

Age

Style

Colour

Hes the one with the wavy brown hair.

Shes wearing a long blue denim skirt.

Its a beautiful old Scottish farmers cottage.

Obs. Verbs seem, look, sound + adjective OR like/as if

She seems/looks/sounds nice. (Ea pare/arat drgu.)

She seems/looks/sounds like a nice person. (Ea pare/arat a fi o persoan drgu.)

She seems/looks/sounds as if shes been running. (Ea arat de parc ar fi alergat.)

** The comparative and superlative of short and long adjectives


Obs. 1. Short adjectives: long, smart, short, tall, safe, etc.
2. Long adjectives: beautiful, terrifying, frightening, important, etc.
a). -> comparative: --- (much/a lot/far/more/less) adj. + -er + than
Ex.

Your brother is taller than me. (Fratele tu este mai nalt dect mine.)

City roads are (much/a lot/far) safer than country roads. (Drumurile de ora sunt
(mult/cu mult/de departe) mai sigure dect drumurile de ar.)

Age is (more/less) important than gender. (Vrsta este (mult mai/mai puin) mai
important dect genul/sexul.)
--- (not) as + adj. + as

The waves in Australia are as big as the waves in South Africa. (Valurile n Australia
sunt la fel de mari ca valurile din Africa de Sud.)

An old car is (not) as safe as a modern car. (O main veche (nu) este la fel de sigur ca
o main modern.)

b). -> superlative: the + adj. + -est SAU the + most/least + adj.

The safest/friendliest drivers are often women. (Cei mai siguri/prietenoi oferi sunt
adesea femei.)

The most/least frequent cause of accidents is speed. (Cea mai/mai puin frecvent cauz
a accidentelor este viteza.)

Obs. Irregular adjectives


* good (bun): better(mai bun) the best (cel mai bun)
* bad (ru): worse (mai ru) the worst (cel mai ru)
* far (departe): further (mai departe) the furthest (cel mai departe)

II. The adverb

* Comparison of adverbs
a). -> comparative: --- (much/a lot/far/more/less) adv. + -ly + than
Ex.

Young men drive (much/a lot) safely than older men. (Brbaii tineri conduc (mult/cu
mult) mai sigur dect brbaii mai n vrst.)

Young men drive [(far) more/less] safely than older men. (Brbaii tineri conduc [(de
departe) mult mai/mai puin] mai sigur dect brbaii mai n vrst.)
--- (not) as + adv. + -ly + as

Ex.

Men dont drive as safely/well/badly/fast as women. (Brbaii nu conduc la fel de


sigur/bine/ru/repede ca femeile.)

b). -> superlative: the + most/least + adv. + -ly


Ex.

Who drives the most/least safely of all of them? (Cine conduce cel mai/cel mai pun
sigur dintre ei to?)
