the theatre. What do you think that Raleigh might be suggesting

b) Look carefully at your list. Why do you think that Raleigh chose
this extended metaphor to present his attitudes to life?

A clear point
Raleigh compares our lives with a performance in the theatre:
Heaven the judicious sharp spectator is, / That sits and marks
still who doth act amiss. Raleigh is comparing God to the
theater audience, watching the actors and judging their
performance. The word sharp suggests not only how keenly
God is watching but also, perhaps, that he may not be very
forgiving of our mistakes. Raleigh also uses a pun on the word
act, a reference to both acting in a play and the way we
behave in our lives. The extended metaphor could suggest that
our lives are just a pretense a part we play and that our real
lives begin when we have left the stage.
