CCGPS or GPS
including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of

RESOURCES
Academic Language

Language Functions
Language Vocabulary
Materials
Technology

I will differentiate for the students being English language learners by scaffolding their
understanding of measurements throughout the week, and by modeling what they are
expected to do. I will differentiate for the students individual needs through the level of
assistance I give them in completing the tasks.
In this lesson, I will differentiate instruction based on the individual needs of each student.
I will also have the class read over the recipe together at the beginning to make sure they
understand it. I will provide help as needed, but we are at the point in the week where they
have learned enough to perform this task.
We will continue reinforcing the academic language of measurements and of cooking,
and we will be using the same words that we used the day before.
The only new words that we may need to go over as a class are words in the recipe such
as mix and stir.
Know & Use
These words are the same as the other days in the unit.
Recipe books that we made yesterday, eight copies of the apple pie recipe, the
ingredients for the pies
We will not be using technology in the class, but the apple pie recipe is from the
Internet.

LESSON PROCEDURE
Enduring
I hope this activity gives them a real life experience with using measurements, and gives
Understanding
them an identity as a competent learner.
Essential Question(s)
What do you need to know in order to cook or bake something? Why is knowing about
measurements so important in cooking?
Students will know a set of measurements, in this case the measurements used in cooking,
Lesson Objectives:
and will be able to use them to make an apple pie.
Content objective &
Language objective
Students will know the set of measurements used in cooking and be able to use their
knowledge of these measurements.
Students will show that they know and can use the set of measurements by following a
recipe to prep an apple pie.
Assessment Link
There will be several informal, formative assessments done, with one formal, summative
assessment at the end of class. These assessments will check for their understanding of
the recipe, their ability to read the recipe, and their ability to perform the measurements
listed.

Introduction to Lesson

I will introduce this lesson by looking at the recipe books thats we made yesterday, and
that I have now put together. This will activate the prior knowledge that they have built
over the week, and it serves as an artifact that they can be proud of.
This will take about 5 minutes.

Specify:

Teacher Activities: I will pass out the recipe books.

Student Activities: They will look at the recipe books.
Assessment: No assessment is needed, other than a very informal assessment of their
participation.
Body of Lesson

Specify:

Closure

Specify:

For the body of the lesson, we will be prepping the apple pies. Students will break into
the groups that were formed on Monday and work together to make an apple pie with the
color apple that they indicated liking the best on Monday. All the groups will follow the
same, simple recipe (http://www.momswhothink.com/easy-recipes/easy-apple-pierecipe.html). They will have to follow along and use the correct measurements as
indicated in the recipe.
This will take 40 minutes.
Teacher Activities: I will explain the activity, pass out copies of the recipe, and monitor
them making the recipe. I will pre-cut the apples so that the students dont need to use a
knife.
Student Activities: The students will make the pie and follow the recipe.
Assessment: Students will be informally assessed by how well they work together and by
how accurately they follow the recipe. I will prompt them to say aloud the steps of the
recipe while they do them.
The students will do a ticket out the door that asks them, Why are measurements
important in cooking? Give an example. They will be expected to do a brief constructed
response answering this question, which is a skill that I have worked on with the
students in the past.
The closure will take five minutes. If they arent able to finish answering the question in
this time, then they can finish it for homework.
Teacher Activities: I will pass out the ticket out the door and reiterate what was learned
previously about how to write a brief constructed response.
Student Activities: The students will answer the ticket out the door.
Assessment: The students will receive a grade for the answer on their ticket out the door.
This will be a summative assessment of what they learned throughout the week about the
use of measurements in cooking.

*ASSESSMENT
Evaluation

I will know that the students have learned what I intended through my informal
assessments throughout the lesson, and by the summative assessment of the brief
constructed response at the end of the lesson.
