Children will work together to come up with a dance, and drama to the song Mr. Golden son.
INSTRUCTION

Teaching strategy:

Child Centered
Introduction/Set induction

Turn the lights off and turn on a flash light. The flash light is like the sun. Today we will be learning
about the sun. The desert is very hot because the sun shines down on it so much. The desert is close to
the equator. The equator is a line that goes around the earth, the closer you are to the equator the
hotter the climate. We are going to be learning a dance and drama and creating a picture of a sun
together.
Instructional Activities

Play the song Mr. Golden Sun for the children. "Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun. Please shine down on me."
Ask the children what motions they can do to go along with the song. If they are having a hard time
coming up with ideas them give them some hits, such as moving your hands through the air. Have the
whole class do the motions together.
Then as the teacher pretend to be the sun and the children will pretend that they are out in the sun and
they are hot. They will need to find shade to hide in. Use a flash light as the light source that the
children must escape.
Conclusion/Closure

Go to the carpet and talk about the sun. Ask the students if they remember what the equator was and
why the desert is so hot.
Transitional Activities

Ask the students to demonstrate the movement they liked the sun dance, one at a time.
How this lesson provides for ASSESSMENT of student learning:

Watching the students interact with one another on coming up with the dance and drama and while
they are painting. Have a check list making sure all the students are engaged and participating.
Pre-assessment

Talking about the sun and the equator before we start the activity will help me understand what the
children know already.
Checking up

During the activity I will be watching the children to see if they come up with creative movement
options to the Mr. Sun song.
Post-assessment

Going over what we learned at carpet time, this will help me to see what children contributed to the
movements in the song.

How this lesson provides DIFFERENTIATION for the students in this class:

Children can do different movements in the dance and drama according to their ability.
