Students will be able to take care of paint brushes and other painting materials.
INSTRUCTION

Teaching strategy:

Child Centered- Informal

Introduction/Set induction

Read part of the book "Hot Desert" by Rose Pipes, where it talks about sandstorms. Talk to the children
about sandstorms and show pictures of sandstorms. Go over with the children that we need to take
care of the equipment that we use during the activity and that they will need to rinse them off before
they can choose another item to paint with. Tell them that it helps show that they care about the
classroom and the materials.
Instructional Activities

There will be one big piece of plain white paper out on the table and the students will have to draw
what they think a sand storm looks like. They will be able to use paint and all types of different
materials such as: toy cars, balls, paint brushes, beads, and other random toys to paint what they think a
sand storm would look like. After using each material the student will have to wash off the item before
they get to choose another one to paint with. Once they have washed their item they may start painting
again with something else.
Conclusion/Closure

Ask the students if the materials are clean/not paint on them. If they are not, have the students take
turns with cleaning them.
Transitional Activities

Sing the song clean up clean up everybody everywhere, clean up clean up everybody do your share!
How this lesson provides for ASSESSMENT of student learning:

Observation- Watch the students as they are using the material if they are being careful with them and
rising them off or not. More of a whole class observation at the end to see if items are clean.
Pre-assessment

Talk about how we need to talk care of the material in the classroom.
Checking up

While they are painting go around and talk with the students about what they are doing and if they are
taking care of the materials that they are using. Stay by the different types of materials to see if the
children are rinsing them off or if they are just getting new ones anyway.
Post-assessment

Have the children decide if the materials are clean enough and if not they can help to clean them more
and if they still are not clean then you can finish after they leave.

How this lesson provides DIFFERENTIATION for the students in this class:

Children can work at their own pace and if they need their own piece of paper then they can do that and
have their own picture. Children can also sweep if they do not like water.
RESOURCES NEEDED

Paint
Toy cars
Balls
Paint brushes
Paint- Brown, yellow, green, orange and red
Other items they can use to paint with
