DAY:

More or Less by Stuart

1

Lesson Plan: M.E. Lewis

HOOK and OPENING: ORAL DRILL QUESTIONS or DO NOW: Reviews basic information that is a prerequisite todays objective.

Essential Questions:

Why do we need to be able to count objects?

How can we use counting to compare objects in a set?
How do we know if a set has more or less?
Build on Prior Knowledge: Revisit more and less
Vocabulary: more, less, greater

Common Core Standards

Subject:

Grade:

Tier 1 Instruction
MCC1.NBT.1 Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write
numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

OBJECTIVE(S)

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

Mini
Lesson

3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Students

discuss how to guess the number
4. Model with mathematics. Students use a number chart to locate their
number.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Attention Grabber: Gather students in a common area and read More or Less,
by Stuart Murphy, or a similar book. During the story, chart the
guesses the students gave and identify them on the 0-99 chart.
Then, have a class discussion about how the children guessed the
principals age. Play the same type of game by having students
guess your principals age. Students will begin guessing the
principals age; once the number is given, have the students
locate it on the 0-99 chart. Only give the students clues by
telling them that the number is more or less.

Work Stations
Differentiated
Instruction

Partner the students to play a version of More or Less. Player One

will write a number on a sticky note and cover it. Player Two will
then try to guess the covered number as Player One guides them to
an answer by saying, more or less. Every number that is guessed is
then covered on the 0-99 chart with a counter. Once the number is
revealed or correctly guessed, the players switch roles and play
again
CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING (15 MINUTES/Per Group) Tier 2 Instruction
(There will be two ipads at each station. These stations are for on level and advanced students to practice math skills.
The group will consist of four students. Two students will work together on the ipad to complete each mobile app. The
rest of the students will work at the teacher led station, practicing this weeks skills).
Station 1: Alien Math
Station 2: Factor Pop!
Station 3: Splash Math
