HOSA Discourse Community
A discourse community which I am a part of is Health Occupations Students of America
(HOSA). My high school had a HOSA club which I was a part of since my freshman year. I am
now a member of the Postsecondary Chapter here at UNC Charlotte. The common goal of
HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate and quality health care by providing
opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science education
students which leads to helping the student meet the needs of the health care community. Our
mechanism of intercommunication are telephones, emails and having weekly meetings. The
mechanism we used to primarily provide information and feedback is OrgSync, which helps link
everything together such as emails, meeting minutes, and meeting dates.
The genres we communicate with are different websites, blogs, journals, and magazine
articles. There are many different lexis in HOSA especially being that everything we do and
learn revolves around healthcare. I completed a pharmacy technician course last year and there
are so many different lexis just in the pharmacy world. The list of abbreviations used in medical
prescriptions and hospital orders which are sometimes referred to as sig codes are a type of lexis.
For example a prescription may read Sig: I tab po qid pc & hs which means take one tablet by
mouth 4 times a day, after meals and at bedtime. There are various members in the community
including students, doctors, advisors, and teachers. As a member of HOSA you will participate in
a variety of activities that will prepare you to become a skilled leader and a member of the health
care field. The purpose of the HOSA organization is to develop leadership and technical HOSA
skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition.

The composition tool I plan to use to create my multimodal presentation is Prezi.
