Lander University Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Morgan Chambers

Subject/Grade: Science/Kindergarten

Lesson # ___1___
Date and Time of Lesson: 9/30/14 10:15 A.M

Learning Objective: Students will be able to discuss and give examples of how humans use their sense of
sight.
Alignment with Standards:
2014 South Carolina Science Academic Standards: K.L.2.A.5
Analyze and interpret data to describe how humans use their senses to learn about the world around them.
C.C W.K.2
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose information/explanatory text in which they
name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections:
Cognitive- The students will need to have a background in the 5 senses and how to write and sentence and draw
a picture to correlate with their writing.
Physical-The students will be walking in the garden exploring with their sense of sight.
Social- Students will communicate with their peers about the things they discover with their sense of sight.
They will share their findings with the class during discussion time before they write.
Emotional- All students will be actively engaged in the lesson and have the opportunity to express themselves
through drawing and writing.
Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objective

The students will have an

understanding of how
humans use their sense of
sight.
(SC Science K.L.2.A.5)

Assessment of the Objective

Use of Formative
Assessment

Pre- As a class, we will

discuss the sense of sight and
read a book about things a
person can see.
During- After reading, the
students will walk around the
garden and observe/share the
things they see with their
sense of sight.
Post- Students will construct
an I See book in which
they will write a sentences to
describe things they see and
draw pictures to depict their
writing.

The data received from

this assessment will
help to guide further
instruction of the senses,
as well as the writing
process. Any areas of
weakness will be
reviewed.

Accommodations:
Students who may finish early will be allowed to pick a lesson and begin working once their writing has been
checked. Students who may not finish in the designated time will be able to finish their work during work time
later in the day. For the ESOL learners, they will be allowed to sit near the teacher during instruction so that

Lander University Lesson Plan

they can visually see the things being discussed when they are pointed to on the board. Since this is an
individual lesson, the teacher will be able to work one on one with students during portions of the lesson if
needed.
Materials:
Pencils
Booklets
Sense of sight book
Dry erase board (teacher material)
Dry erase marker (teacher material)
Crayons/Markers
Procedures:
Motivational techniques- To gain the interest of the students, they will be allowed to walk around our
class garden to discover things that they can see with their sense of sight. The students love working and
being out in the garden any chance they are able to do so.
Grouping- Since this is a primary Montessori class made up of 4 and 5 year olds, this lesson will be
done only with the 5 year olds while the 4s are gone to recess.
Instructional Strategies-1. As a class, we will discuss what we know about the five senses. 2. After our
introductory discussion the teacher will conduct a read aloud of Seeing Things by Allan Fowler. 3. Once
the read aloud is completed, the students will make their way to the garden to walk around and explore
with their sense of sight. 4. After walking around the garden, the students may share some of the things
that they saw with their sense of sight. 5. Students will then construct an I See book writing things
they see and drawing pictures to depict their writings.
Probing questions- What are the 5 senses? How do people use their sense of sight? What are some
things you use your sense of sight for?
Lesson closure- Students will construct their own books which will depict what they know about the
sense of sight. Once completed students will turn in their books and being working on a lesson if time
allows.
Activity Analysis:

Activity 1- Upon reading, the students will explore the garden to discover things they can see with their
sense of sight. This activity supports the lesson objective because the students, humans, will be using
their sense of sight to discover the world around them as well as sharing the things that they see with the
class. This activity stems from the students characteristics because all of the students have a strong
desire to be out in the garden whenever possible, they also enjoy exploring and discovering new things.
This activity also stems from the students need to be able to move around and interact with their peers.
During this activity there will not be any technology implemented because the students will be outside
exploring the world around them.
Activity 2- After the students have returned from using their sense of sight to explore things in the
garden, they will construct an I See book. They will write sentences about things they see and then
draw pictures to depict their writing. This activity stems from the students characteristics because many
of the students have a desire to write about the things they encounter as well as using drawings to tell a
story. This activity stems from the students needs as well, because the students need more practice with
writing sentences and drawing pictures that correlate with what they have written. During this activity
there will not be any use of technology implemented because the students are constructing their own

personal books. Some words that the students do not know may be written on the board, but they will be
written on the dry erase board which is easier for the students to access.
