TWS 10: Communication

A. Family Communication
As a teacher, effective and positive communication with parents/guardians is a vital
component of the classroom. By having this communication with parents/guardians they
are able to keep up with what their student is studying, any behavior issues, academic
progression, and important dates happening within the classroom. As an early childhood
educator, I feel that having good communication with parents helps not only the students,
but the parents as well with adjusting to a school routine. At the beginning of the year I
would send home a letter to the parents/guardians introducing myself and ways that they
can contact me throughout the year. I would either directly give these directly to the
parents/guardians at open house before school started or send the letter home with the
students on the first day of school. Weekly newsletters will be sent home with each
student in the beginning of the week, though this is not a direct form of communication
the newsletter keeps the parents/guardians informed about studies going on in the class,
important dates and reminders, special announcements, as well as my contact information
if they have any questions or concerns. Daily notes will be sent home in the students
agendas, varying from a simple smile face for a good day to a short note that may state a
behavior issue. Any severe issues will be documented and phone calls and/or conferences
will be arranged if needed. Positive relationships with parents/guardians help to make a
classroom run smoothly for everyone involved, and I will do everything I can to work
with my students and their parents/guardians to make their school year as rewarding as
possible.

B. Communication/Collaboration with Colleagues

Respect and positive communication with colleagues plays a tremendous role in the flow
of collaboration between teachers. As a grade level, there is usually one day per week
where every teacher from that grade level sits down and plans out their lessons or testing
for the following weeks. Though teachers may have different ideas for the classroom
content this is done so that all classes are covering the same types of standards at the
same time. This is a vital time, especially for new teachers, because of the help and
guidance you can receive from veteran teachers about how to cover certain topics and
adjust plans to fit the classroom. There are many students who receive resource for
various things such as speech, ESOL, occupational therapy, as well as numerous others. I
feel that is it important to establish good communication and collaboration with these
specialized area teachers as well so that together we can work to benefit the student in
both classrooms. By communicating with the specialized teacher, ideas and suggestions
can be made for working with that student in my classroom as well so that they will be
able to work more effectively. Without this collaboration I dont feel that the students are
getting enough support to help them excel as much as possible. A positive relationship

with administrative staff is important as well. As the people who make the final decision
about everything that happens within the school, it is crucial to have good communication
with them. Being prompt and on time for meetings and assignments (i.e. long range
plans) I feel is one way to have a good relationship with the administrative staff. By
doing this they know that you are serious about your job and take responsibility to have
your assignments in on time. Professionalism is a requirement in the work field, and
being able to communicate your seriousness about your work I feel shows how
passionate you are about teaching and sends a positive message to colleagues.
