Due to the fact that I transferred to Rider after graduating Gloucester County
College, I have had a lot of different experiences between the schools. While I was enrolled
at Gloucester County I was an English major but did take one education course, it was
called Intro to the Profession. This class really prepared me for what to look forward to as
an upcoming teacher. I was a freshman when I took that course and it reminded me why I
wanted to be a teacher. At GCC I was only able to take one course in the education field but
I was able to take many English courses and that really helped develop my writing.
When I transferred to Rider I took a look at my schedule and was a little
overwhelmed at the amount of work I was about to embark on. However, the education
course I took at Rider really prepared me to have my own classroom. From the very first
education class I took at Rider the course offered me field experience. I was placed in a 6
th
grade English classroom at Fisher Middle School and was able to see first hand what the
classroom really felt like. I was able to interact with students and teach my very own lesson.
Furthermore, Rider offered me technology courses that broaden my knowledge of how to
use a Smart Board, Twitter, and other types of social media in the classroom. Rider also
offers professional development workshops that provide me with tips on how to use iPads in
the class, classroom management, and how to help dyslexic students in the classroom.
During my time at Rider, I have held a job at Chesterfield Elementary School in
Chesterfield, New Jersey. I work with children from Kindergarten through sixth grade. This
opportunity has also led me to better understand the middle school student. All my
experiences have prepared me for this next adventure, and I cannot wait.
