We are going to be learning something new in math today!

Show picture of the ten frame, can anyone tell me what this is called?
Where have we seen a ten frame before?
Why is it called a ten frame?
It is very important to listen carefully because we are learning
something new and it is very important
We are going to watch a short video in ten frames
We are going to do some fun activities on the smartboard to help you
understand ten frames
Then we will be doing 4 math centers, and there is going to be one new
center today!

Learning Activity #2

Observe if students seem to understand how to count the ten frames

Smartboard balloon and ten frame games


Show students the ten frame with 4 circles how many circles are on
this ten frame this is how the video showed 4 as well
But what if I moved something around - move the circles around the
ten frame is this still 4?
Move them again is this still 4?
YES, it does not matter which they are if there is 4 counters there is
always 4
This is just like the plates we have been practicing with a six can look
very different when we arranged it on our plates and looks very
different than the six on a dice
I am going to need some helpers to with these next smart board
activities!
I have some more subitizing games with balloon popping and arrange
different ten frames who thinks they would be able to help me!
Oh good! I am going to use the popsicle stick jar and there is enough
slides for each person to go once so when your name is picked you
can come up and help me write down the number
The person who gets picked is going to come up and pop the balloon, I
need everyone to look at the ten frame and figure out how many are in
the ten frame when you have an answer put your hands on your head
but DO NOT shout out the answer this will let everyone have a
chance to count them on their own
Let ocean pick out the popsicle stick remind her before hand about
the importance of choosing random sticks so that everyone gets a turn
and it is very fair. Explain that I will be holding the popsicle sticks but
she can take one out when it is her turn
Choose a popsicle stick let that person pop the balloon and leave
enough wait time for everyone to get a chance to look at them and
when everyone has their hands on their heads blow the balloon back
up and ask the class okay grade 1s how many counters were their?
Pop the balloon again and say the answer let that student who is up
print the number on the smartboard beside the balloon
Move on to the next screen without erasing because of timing
Go through each student this way until the balloon pop screens are
done
Two ways of ten frame screens explain to students that on these ten
frames they have to find another way to find the number that I have
put up for instance if I put up 3 counters on the ten frame they have
to try and find another way to show 3 counters on the ten frame
Explain to the other students that they need to think in their head how
they would create that number in a ten frame
Go through the rest of the students

We will be doing the new math centers today
We have a new center today! It is called Ten Frame Memory and
Mrs. Boodhoo will be running this station to teach you this new
game
Our other centers will be Magnet Fun, Fishing for Numbers and
Computers
Ten Frame Memory will be in the back table by the microwave. Can
everyone point to where Ten Frame Memory will be

Magnet Fun will be at the U shaped circle on the grey carpet can
everyone point to where Magnet Fun will be
Fishing for Numbers will be at the table by the reading chair on the
gray carpet can everyone point to where this center will be
Yesterday, Luke suggested doing centers with our table teams for a
change and so today we will be going to the different centers in our
table teams! You will all get 15 minutes at each center, so dont
worry if you dont get your favourite center first you will all have a
chance to go to all the centers
When we are at the computer centers we need to try the first 4
new math websites first! Then you can move onto any of the other
math centers on Mrs. Boodhoos page!
Are we allowed to go on FRIV at this time? No, I will be coming
around and checking and I want to see everyone listening to this
rule!
Put up the centers/teams page
If you look on the screen you can see where you are and which center
you are it once you see where your team is put your hands on your
head and wait quietly
Read out where each team is
I will be looking for quiet groups to send first
Send groups to their center one by one Okay ___ group hop over to
your center and count your hops
After 15 minutes turn lights on/off, hands up CLASS CLASS
Wait until everyone has their hands up and eyes up at me - It has been
15 minutes we now need to start cleaning up and meet me at the red
carpet to see where your new center is
Observe to check for student understanding of number matching, 10
frames and counting
