Communication and Collaboration

A. Family Communication
1. Work Traits and Behavior Report
The first form of communication I would use for the
parents/guardians would be a Work Traits and Behavior Report.
This slip of paper would include five categories: raises hand to
speak during class lessons, listens and participates, talks at
appropriate times, uses work time well, and follows directions. I
would send this form home every Friday. This form of
communication would allow the parents/guardians to know how
their child acted for the week. If there were a specific issue the
child was having, I would simply write a note on the back of the
slip. The Work Traits and Behavior Report is located on the side
bar labeled attachment one.
2. Introduction Letter
The second form of communication I would use would be an
introduction letter. This letter would be sent out to the
parents/guardians at the beginning of the year, allowing the
parents and student to get to know me. I would include
information such as my name, my educational background, and a
way for parents to contact me. The Introduction Letter is located
on the side bar labeled attachment two.
3. Monthly Newsletter
The third form of communication I would use, would be a weekly
newsletter. This newsletter would include the following
information: topics to be covered in every subject, any important
information, the students homework, vocabulary words, and
spelling words. I would send this newsletter home every Friday. If
there were any questions or concerns regarding the weeks
schedule the parents would have this form in advance, and it
would allow them to know every planned prior to the week
beginning.
B. Communication/Collaboration with Colleagues
1. Communication with grade level teachers
The first form of communication/collaboration I would use would
be with my grade level teachers. Since there is only one hour for
planning throughout the day, I would plan a time for all of the
grade level teachers to meet up before school one day a week. This
would allow the teachers to plan lessons together, share helpful
advice, and discuss any other information.

2. Communication with the Guidance Counselor

The second form of communication I would use would be with the
school guidance counselor. I would discuss with her certain issues
I have seen throughout the month, and ask her to come in and
speak with my class about those issues. For example: if my class
were having trouble helping others, I would have the guidance
counselor come in and speak with my class about ways to help
others. The email example is located on the side bar labeled
attachment three.
3. Communication with Community Member
The third form of communication I would use would be an email to
a community member. In second grade, we talked about
communities. I would send an email to the local recycling plant,
and ask if one of the recycle workers would come in and speak to
my class. This opportunity would give students a real example to
connect their learning with. The email example is located on the
side bar labeled attachment four.

Dear Guidance Counselor,
This month my students have been having trouble with helping others. A lot of the
issues are between the girls, but I think it would be a great time for the entire class
to hear you talk about ways to be help others. Is there anyway you could come in
and chat with my students next week? This would be an excellent opportunity as we
are beginning the character trait, Generosity, next week.
We can talk after school in more detail about specific issues I have been having.
Thank you for all of your help!

Subject: Classroom Visit
Dear Local Recycling Center,
My students have just finished a social studies unit on communities. At the end of
the unit, we discussed ways to help keep our community clean. A lot of the students
brought up recycling, which leads directly into our next unit of study in science. I
wanted to see if one of the recycle workers would like to come in and talk about the
benefiting factors of recycling?
If you could please give me call at your earliest convenience to discuss this
opportunity in more detail. My number is (864) 555-7777. I am available to talk
Monday-Friday after 3:00 PM.
Thank you,
Teddi Steadman
