able to listen to it
we are going to read a story to learn about rhyming words and then
we are going to go to our desks and play a game
Rhyming words means that the two words have the same ENDING
sounds! They can have different beginning sounds, but need to have
the same ending sounds inorder to be words that rhyme.
Body
Read Hop on Pop Dr. Seuss
Show the class the cover of the book HOP on POP!

Lets look at the beginning sounds H and P do those beginning
sounds sound the same?

words
This book we are going to read is FULL of rhyming words I know
rhyming is very exciting but lets not shout out any answers or rhyming
words when we see them because we need to be quiet so that everyone
can hear the story
We will be talking about the rhyming words in the book after, so you all
need to pay special attention

Rhyming cards from book

Dr. Suess has great books for rhyming; during your next reading time
you should pick up a Dr. Suess book and see how many rhyming
words you can find!
we are going to talk about some of the rhyming words that we seen in
the book
put up the pup card onto the whiteboard with tape
sound out the word by beginning, middle and end p-u-p
what word in the book rhymes with pup?
I am only choosing people who are sitting quietly and have their
hands up
Yes, pup! Put up pup and show them how the ending sounds are the
same sound it out and look at the same spelling at the end
Do this for the rest of the words
Transition to next activity:
I think you are ready to play the rhyming game because you all
seem to have a great understanding of rhyming
I need you all to move in close so I can explain the instructions for
the game
You all are going to have a partner and this partner is going to be
your elbow buddy at your table so Chelsey your elbow partner is
Julianna and Jayda your elbow partner is Ryder! ( explain group of
3 if any student is missing)
Each group of elbow partners will get a sheet that looks like this (
show sheet) and a few counters
You have to look at the picture in the box and see if it rhymes with
any of the pictures in the same row, if you found a match you put a
counter on the picture when you are done number #1 put your
hands on your head so I see that you are ready
Do not move onto number 2 until the whole class is ready to move
on
When you get to your table spot sit quietly you can start working
on number 1

________ - who will our partner?

__________ - what do we do when we get to our table spot
_______ - what do you and your partner need to do when you are
done number 1?
Do you move onto number 2 or wait
Yes wait, because we are going to check each one together on the
smart board
I am going to look for the quietest group to send back to their table
spots first
Send each group back and tell them to walk quietly

discussion
put the picture in the box on the smart board
when each group has their hands on their head ask one of them what
the answer is and pull that up onto the smartboard
ask someone why they rhyme
underline or circle the ending sounds in the words that rhyme
do this for all 6 words
if timing is an issue do the first couple together as a class and check
on the smartboard and than let the partners do the rest on their own
and check their boards when they are done all 6.
If you have students moving ahead when they are not supposed to
make the next question put the counter on the picture that does NOT
rhyme with the picture in the box this will make them have to listen
to instructions before moving on
Observation of group work do they seem to have a general
understanding of rhyming
Can they match rhyming words and pictures of words

Rhyming flash cards! Give each elbow partner group 3 sets of flash cards to
pair up the words that rhyme
