Social Worker: Hi Everyone,

welcome back to IOP, Intensive
Outpatient Group. Well, I
discussed doing random drug
testing and it being a
requirement to stay in this group.
Today in our second group
session together will be the first
required drug test.
In this box, I have a cup thats in
each and every one of these bags
(holds up bag with cup in it) on
each bag has one of your names
on it, I will call your name and
when I do get your bag from me,
and go out the door of this room
go left, go down the hall pass the
reception desk, past the waiting
room, out the double doors turn
left, and go into the bathroom
take the cup out of the bag, take
the lid off and urinate into the
cup. When you are done put the
top back on the cup, put the cup
back inside the bag, and put the
bag inside the door in the
bathroom, which is located on
the far left corner on the opposite
side of the sinks and toilets.
When all the cups are collected

the staff with test them for drugs
and alcohol.
(Testing of the drug tests of each
member in the group took about
15-20 minutes.)(When all the
cups were tested and I received
the results and everyone was
back in the room I started
group.)
Social Worker: Ok, thank you
everyone for providing me with
your drug tests, everyone pretty
much passed except for Terry,
which was positive for alcohol.
Social Worker: So, Terry I will
start with you, when was the last
time you drank alcohol and how
much did you drink?
Terry: Well I know I shouldnt
have been drinking especially
with whats going on with me
legally, and I was doing okay
and I wasnt drinking but
yesterday I had some friends and
their wives over my house for a
barbeque. We were barbeque in
hamburgers, hot dogs,
bratwursts, and chicken. My
friends brought over coolers of
beer, and wine with them. At
first I was good. Probably for the
first hour I didnt drink, they
offered me a beer but I said no
even though it was so difficult
for me to do, but my wife was
looking at me and giving me a
look like dont you dare. So I
didnt.

Social Worker: So, because you
got scolded from your wife you
didnt drink at first.
Terry: Yes, Yes it was. It was
like I was a child getting a look
from my mom. But man it was
hard to pass on a beer.
Social Worker: It is difficult to
be around alcohol when trying to
get and stay sober.
Terry: Yes it was. I was so mad
at my wife for giving me that
look; It was like I was a child
getting a look from my mom to
not do something with my friend.
I was so mad at her like how
dare her.
Social Worker: Are your friends
aware of your alcohol and legal
issues?
Terry: Kind of.
Social Worker: Kind of?
Terry: Well they know I got
pulled over and that I got
arrested and it had to do with
alcohol, but thats it.
Social Worker: So, It appears to
me that your friends are not
aware of the full story and the
whole truth of what really
happened.
Terry: Yeah, they dont know
that I got my third operating
while intoxicating charge. They
also dont know about my two
prior convictions either. While
they know about my operating
while intoxicating charge I got in
2009 and thats only because my
friends Ben and Jason were
driving in Bens car in front of

me and my friend Sam was in
my car. Since we were all out
that night and especially because
our friend Sam was in my car,
his wife Stephanie had to come
to the screen and pick Sam and
drive him home, his wife
Stephanie also called my wife to
tell her what happened with me.
It was sort of embarrassing to get
in trouble especially because
every one of my closest friends
knew and they were out with me
that night, we all went out to the
bar. So I dont want them to
know about my 1998 or this
current conviction.
Social Worker: You are
ashamed of yourself and with the
circumstances going on right
know in your life. Youre
embarrassed to tell your friend
the truth because of their
judgments towards the situation
and of what they may say to you.
Terry: (pauses for a moment)
Yeah, I guess I am. I never really
thought of it like that. But the
more I think about it and what
you (points to me) said I am
ashamed of myself. Who would
be proud or want to talk about
their bad circumstances with
their friends. Especially because
I am 43 years old, I should be
out of the party and getting in
trouble stage already but I am
not proud of my actions, I am
actually ashamed like you said
(he looks at me) and thats what
keeps me from telling them.

Social Worker: So, because you
are 43 years old you should be
over the partying stage of your
life.
Terry: Yes, 43 years old is too
old for this sort of thing of
getting into trouble with
drinking. I never thought that at
my age I would be dealing with
this. I always thought I would be
past it. So thats why when my
friends came over to my house
for a barbeque and offered me a
beer, at first I didnt take one
because my wife was looking but
then when my wife walked away
and about an hour into it my
friend Jason asked me if I
wanted a beer again and I said
yes.
Social Worker: So you gave into
peer pressure being around your
friends while they were drinking.
Terry: Yeah. I was around my
friends and they were all
drinking beer and I didnt want
to be the odd man out so I drank
beer with them too. My wife was
in the house with the other wives
and I was outside with my
friends. I downed the first one,
than just kept drinking beer after
beer with the guys. Than about 7
beers in my wife found out and
boy was she mad. I had about
10-12 beers.
Social Worker: Your wife was
upset with your choice to drink.
Terry: Oh man was she. After
my friends left she didnt say
anything to me, not even a single

word she said. She just went up
to bed, shut and locked the bed
room door and I had to sleep on
the couch. This morning she was
up, dressed and out, she didnt
wake me up or nothing.
Empathe
Social Worker: Wow, she must
tic
be really upset with you.
Terry: Yeah. Hopefully she does
not divorce me. I feel like shit
for what I put my wife through.
She doesnt deserve what I put
her through. Shes so opposite
than me. She hardly drinks,
swears, shes nice, sweet, kind,
caring. She lives to help other
people. I dont know what she
ever seen in him.
Social Worker: So, you dont
feel like you are good enough for
your wife.
Terry: No, thats why I feel so
bad for what I did. I just cant
stop. I cant be around alcohol I
cant do it whatsoever. I always
think about drinking, I always
want to drink. Its so hard that I
just eventually give in.
Social Worker: So, youre
admitting to me as well as to this
entire group that you have a
problem with drinking?
Terry: (thinking about, a little
teary eyed) Yeah.
Social Worker: Thats a big
step. Thats good that you are
able to admit that you have a
problem with alcohol.
Terry: Yeah it has done too
much bad in my life its just hard
to say no to it.
Sara Kornoski

Process Recording #2
Social Worker: So, what youre
saying is that you cant say no to
it?
Terry: Yes, I need help.
Social Worker: Ok, thats what
we are here for. Have you ever
considered going to inpatient
rehab?
Terry: Yeah, I would go. I think
I need Well, (pauses for 5
seconds) I need to go to get my
life in order.
Social Worker: Ok, I will have
the receptionist find an inpatient
rehab facility for you to go to.
Terry: Okay Thank you I think I
need to go.
Social Worker: Yes. Youre
welcome.
Terry: So would I go today,
tomorrow, this week or next
week, when?
Social Worker: whenever they
have a spot for you. I will have
the receptionist call and see and
let you know.
Terry: Ok.
Social Worker: Ok, IOP, this is
the last session of group. Thank
you all for participating. I hope
you all gained insight into
addiction as well as into your
life. For those of you going
through legal issues I will write
out a letter stating that you
finished IOP and for the rest of
you I hope you all continue in a
12 step program, counseling, and
everything positive you are all
doing. I am glad you all came to
group. Terry, I will get that
