I am interning at Community Housing Network that is located in Troy Michigan. My title

is as a Community Programs Intern. I work under the Emergency Solutions Grant Program. The
Emergency Solutions Grant Program is a short-term program to help individuals and families
that are at zero to thirty percent below the median income level with financial assistance with up
to six months of their rent as well as help with their past due utility costs. Besides being zero to
thirty percent below the median income level individuals and their families also have to be either
literally homeless, at imminent risk of becoming homeless, fleeing domestic violence, and
anything else that fall under the federal statutes that consider individuals and their families of
being homeless. My role has changed from last semester to this semester. This semester I have
more responsibility. I now conduct Emergency Solution Grant Program meetings and do their
intakes with them.
Evaluation of my practice with client systems
With the clients I explain every document within the ESG packet. The purpose of the
documents is to ensure our clients meet the requirements set forth by the government. We also
have documents that need to be filled out by the landlord. When the landlord fills out the
documents they are then returned to the agency to assure they have been correctly completed and
signed by the landlord. The next step is to inspect the housing, if all is in order, I give the
landlord a check and my client is able to move into their new housing.
I set up a file for the client that contains information regarding their case. I also link
clients up with additional resources, and supports they are in need of to become more
independent. I recommend agencies that may be able to help resolve past due utility bills when
the amount exceeds more than what the ESG program can pay. I identify additional agencies that
may be able to assist the clients, and they choose to or not to utilize the resources we have made

available; but if they dont utilize the resources they may lose future rent assistance. Additional
services they may utilize are substance abuse treatment, homeless shelters, food banks, clothing
and mental health. Just to name a few. They may also be eligible for additional housing programs
through Community Housing Network based on the information given to us.
Evaluation of the impact I have on the Client Systems
My evaluation with client systems has been productive. I always put my best foot
forward. The Emergency Solutions Grant Program has provided me with the opportunity to be as
effective as I can be with the client. The clients are grateful for the programs that benefit them to
start a new chapter in their lives.
Skills needed in order for me to work in my current field placement setting
The skills needed in order for me to work in my current field placement setting is the
ability to always remain professional, no matter how hard the situation may become. More
characteristics are your demeanor, reliability, competence, maintaining poise, phone etiquette,
and written correspondence that are done in a professional way. Organizational skills and
accountability are also important. You must be polite and well-spoken when conducting
meetings with the client, your superiors and co-workers. It is important to respond to clients,
supervisors, co-workers and other professionals in a timely manner .Always follow through on
what is expected of you. Be a team player; be willing to help co-workers when possible.
It is important to be competent in the work you are performing. Always follow procedure. Be
knowledgeable on every document, how to fill it out and what the document is meant to convey.
Always explain to a client what the ESG program is and how it may be of help to the client.
Explain everything in a way the client will understand, but never be condescending. Never show
your frustration. Treat every person you come in contact with, with respect and dignity. Attend

all meetings and seminars that are given, you will gain knowledge and it shows you are always
looking for ways to improve. You must never get angry, and must remember that the client is
frustrated and looking to you for any help you can offer.
While speaking on the phone speak clearly and when taking a message, it is best to
repeat it back to make sure you have written it down correctly. Do not interrupt anyone until they
have finished speaking. Introduce yourself before speaking to people on the phone and explain
your reason for the call.
Most communication in an office is through emails and not letters. When writing emails, first acknowledge the individual you emailing, then state in a brief description/reason of
why you are emailing the individual. Always read over to check that it is accurate, has no
spelling errors, the main point is addressed, and well-thought-out. Always know where client
files are and make them easily available to you. Keep your work desk organized and neat.
Otherwise you may not be able to locate files in a timely manner. Before making phone calls, be
sure you have everything you may need in front of you, such as, a client file, and a notebook to
take down notes while speaking on the phone. Always be accountable for the work you are
responsible for. If you do make a mistake, report it to your supervisor and correct it as soon as
possible. Check your work for mistakes before you take the next step.
Population a good fit for me? And was the Field Practice a good fit for me?
The field practice and the homeless individuals and families population are a good fit for
me. I dont know if I would stay working with this population for a long period of term because
it is not where my passion lays. I got into social work to work, enhance the lives of special needs
children and adults. I have learned a lot while working with the homeless population, being
exposed to a diverse population that I did not have much experience with, so I will take what I

have learned to where ever the future leads me. Through my supervisors and colleagues I have
discovered ways to help me deal with and speak to a diverse population in a productive way. I
have found myself to be effective when I am polite, straightforward, and discuss what I need to
with them. At the field practice I was exposed to a population that I did not have much, if any,
experience with and I was able to gain experience and knowledge.
Improvement to my social work practice with client systems
To improve my social work practice with client systems I will gain a better understanding
of the overall circumstances of the clients I work with. I will ask questions when I am unsure of
something a client, supervisor, colleague, and other professionals have said to me. I would
professionally confront the clients when they state information to me that I am unsure about and
doesnt sound right, instead of being afraid to confront the client because of a confrontation or
conflict that could potentially arise from it. I would be more confident of my social work abilities
and not insecure and I would not second guess myself.
My experiences at Community Housing Network contributed to my knowledge of ethical
social work practice
My experiences at Community Housing Network has contributed to my knowledge of
ethical social work practice by promoting the agencies mission statement with each and every
client that is served at the agency and its programs that they have. Policies and procedures are
addressed and implemented throughout the agencies programs working with the clients that are
seeking services. Supervisors make sure that the staff follows the policies and procedures that are
in place for them to follow. Each client is treated the same with dignity and respect. The staff is
compassionate toward the clients and wants to do what they can to help them. Some staff will go
out of their way to do what they can to help clients and improve their lives. Social Workers can

advocate for the homeless population to help change policies to benefit this population. Social
Workers have a Code of Ethics, its the guide of values and ethical standards social workers need
to follow. Social Workers also have a Code of Ethics to respect and advocate for our clients who
are of populations that are at risk as well as oppressed groups. Its important to give these
individuals a voice.
My field placement helped me understand the values of the social work profession and has
assisted me in the development of ethics for social work practice
My field placement has helped me to understand the values of the social work profession.
Community Housing Networks primary goal is to help people that are in need of housing, as
well as addressing homelessness in Oakland County. Community Housing documents the
demographics of the homeless population, gives surveys to the clients that have exited the
programs within the last sixty to ninety days to receive feedback on their experience and what we
can improve on. They also thrive to enhance clients lives, by linking them up with services,
resources, and supports. When working with landlords, the staff makes sure that the clients are
not discriminated against and laws and policies are followed. The Fair Housing Act is to ensure
that clients are able to live where they choose. At Community Housing Network I attended a
conference about the Fair Housing Act that educated the staff to help improve clients rights. The
staff respects self-determination by allowing the client to pick what they want done in their lives.
The staff helps to fight social injustice by advocating for the clients when injustices are done to
them. The staff always treats the clients with dignity and respect. They realize the importance of
human relationships and refer their clients to services, resources and supports that could
potentially enhance their relationships with people and to gain meaningful relationships. The
staff serves their clients with integrity by promoting ethical principles and always following

procedures and policies. Conferences are held within Oakland County to enhance the staffs
knowledge base and inform them of additional information needed to do their jobs and be
competent doing so.
Globally social workers can improve the lives of the homeless population by identifying
the risks that could potentially cause homelessness and implement resources, services and
supports that could help improve their lives. By identifying the risks early and getting help, could
lead to their lives being improved and meaningful, I think early intervention is always better and
helps longer term.
