PMC Mini Project / Assignment 2

1.
2.
3.
4.

Develop dynamic models for the following problems.

Make simplifying assumptions if justified.
Validate your models using Relap5/experiment/etc,
Submit hard as well as soft copies of model, assumptions, program and results analysed in view
of modeling and numerical errors. Submit the soft copy as a compressed folder.

Grading will be through presentation and viva on 24, 25 November at 8:25 am.

Group 1 Develop a model for a long bare pipe carrying a hot fluid. Study the dynamic response for a step
change in inlet temperature. Also study the effect of Rayleigh number on T(x) for various values
of prandtl number and pipe length.
Group 2 Develop a model for a very long bare pipe carrying natural gas from Gawader to Sadiqabad
during the month of December. Study the dynamic response for a step change in inlet flowrate.
Group 3 Develop a model for a water-water double pipe heat exchanger and find the dynamic response
for a step change in hot fluid inlet temperature, cold fluid in temperature and hot fluid inlet
flowrate.
Group 4 Develop a model for the helical coil heat exchanger in the process control lab and find the
dynamic response for a step change in cold fluid inlet flowrate.
Group 5 Develop a model for filling a CNG tank of a vehicle and plot all variables as a function of time for
constant filling pressure and two step filling pressure. Take care of chocking flowrate.
Group 6 Consider storage of natural gas at night time when the line pressure is between 1 to 2 psig.
Consider storage in a LPG cylinder within its design conditions. Work out a solution for a typical
family with cost analysis.
Group 7 Consider storage of natural gas at night time when the line pressure is between 1 to 2 psig.
Consider storage in a constant pressure volume tank with a pressure of 10 psig. Work out a
solution with cost analysis for a small town of 100 houses.
Group 8 Develop a model for single component boiler. Make simplifying assumptions and plot dynamic
response of boiler level for a step change in outlet flowrate.
Group 9 Develop a model for a two component flash drum. Make simplifying assumptions and plot
dynamic response of drum composition for a step change in outlet flowrate.
