The studio, which explored urban design strategies in relation to infill housing typologies, was supported by Eee ao Senior Associate Dean Adam Drisin, Associate Professor Jason Chandler, and Instructor Malik Benjamin joined with Architecture students to design the “Oasis Center” for teens and young adults in Liberty City, Miami. The pro-bono Community engagement effort was done in collaboration with the TACOLCY Center of Liberty City. [2] Professor Marilys Nepomechie was awarded a CINTAS Foundation Fellowship and was on the FIU/Tsinghua University team that competed in the international Solar Decathlon China competition. Bee So RIL UR eS UUM Ue Re eRe eS Mu eC Gee Pee ec Oar en er en RCM Tenure NC Master of Landscape Architecture student Vanessa Alvarado was awarded the Florida ASLA Award, one of only two awards given in the entire state. 2012-2013 ACCOMPLISHMENTS The Department of Art + Art History, in conjunction with the Miami Children’s Hospital, the Miami Moving the Lives of Kids Community Mural Project, and FIU’s chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha, initiated the Worlds Ahead Mural Project. Students and faculty created an original artwork for the Urgent Care Center of Miami Children’s West Kendall Outpatient Center. [1] Department Chair Jacek J. Kolasinski and Department Chair of Landscape Architecture Roberto Rovira received a $95,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Broward County in support oftheir interdisciplinay creative work. The work of Professors Mirta Gomez and Eduardo Del Valle was selected for inclusion in the permanent collection of the George Eastman House Photography Museum in Rochester, New York. Their work was also included in the permanent collection of the Norton Museum of Artin West Palm Beach, Florida, Assistant Professor Michael Namkung received the 2013 Tanne Foundation Award. The FIU Debate Team and the Office of Global Learning Initiatives allied with the prestigious Kettering Foundation CRE eee eed eco aR accent aor ea deliberative democracy to create a Center for Public Life at FIU From speech writing to message delivery, Communication Arts students coached members of the Miami Coalition for the Homeless as they prepared their stories of what life was like on the streets; together they increased community awareness and sensitivity of important issues related to homelessness. Te Oe es Te oP RN sc Re a Come oN Wes provided resume and interviewing workshops for the City of Sweetwater. We collaborated with job seekers to help fulfill their employment goals, whether for part-time or permanent positions. [2] The CommArts Studio collaborated with the College of Business Administration to prepare students for the 2013 Eee een me ee eo Ke Ueno) Hosted by the FIU Debate Team, the University of Dublin's Irish National Debate Team participated at the Miami Beach Urban Studios in a community debate centered on the issue: “Should the public fund the arts?” (3} Communication Arts teamed with Art + Art History and the Liberty City Community Revitalization Trust to design and oreate the “Tree of Life," a mural celebrating the diversity of Liberty City that involved the local community and kids in creating the artwork. [4] 2012-2013 ACCOMPLISHMENTS Associate Professor of Musicology David Dolata spent the summer as Visiting Research Professor of Musicology at the Centre d'Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance, a multi-disciplinary research institute housed at the Ten geen cas Amernet String Quartet members, Instructors Misha Vitenson, Marcia Littley, Michael Klotz, and Jason Calloway, Pee See Le ees go Assistant Professor Cathy Benedict, along with a team of FIU music students known as Miami Music Project Scholars, provided free weekly after-school music instruction to Miami youth, while simultaneously analyzing erence ee a a See EMM ESS eee Und See Meee Lu race aa) BRS Se R CLR De CRs tae Le SO emu ORE E Re CU RC Un et italy. During the six-week residency he completed new works for the Miami Symphony Orchestra and the Latin American String Quartet scheduled to premiere in 2014 - 15 in Miami. Assistant Professor and Head of Design and Production Jesse Dreikosen and Assistant Professor Tony Galaska received the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival's 2013 Excellence in Scene Design and 2013 Excellence in Lighting Design Awards, respectively. Julian Acosta ('95 BFA) (quest star on “The West Wing,” “Entourage,” and “The George Lopez Show”) had his theatrical directorial debut with Short Eyes by Miguel Piero, which was then selected by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs to represent the city atthe International Hispanic Theatre Festival in Miami Ruben Gutierrez ((06 MA) founder of Errez Designs, was featured in the book “The Tropical Cottage” by Beth Dunlop for his company's renovation of a 1910 cottage in Coconut Grove.
