Guided Questions:
1. List all ingredients with ate, -ite, -ide, and -ous endings along
with all ingredients containing per and hypo prefixes. What to
these prefixes and endings indicate about the ingredient?
2. List any ingredient with prefixes such as mono, di, tri, tetra,
penta, hepta, octa What do these prefixes indicate about the
chemical substance?
3. Find the formulas of 4 different ingredients and list them.
4. Identify one compound/ingredient that you are not familiar
with (may be one of the ingredients listed in #3). Do not choose
a common substance!
a. Find a structure or a partial structure of the chemical
substance.
b. Research the uses for this chemical substance. What is
the ingredient purpose in this product? What other products is
this chemical substance used in?
c. Are there any hazards, allergies, chemical reactions or
waste disposal issues related to this substance?
5. Are the ingredients listed in any particular order? If yes, how
are they listed?
6. What is the difference between an active and inactive
ingredient? Does your compound contain any active ingredients?
If it does, what is it? What are the purposes for the inactive
ingredient in the product?
7. Define the term preservative. Are there any preservatives or
dyes used in your product? If there are, identify which
ingredients are used as preservatives and which are dyes.
