Collaborative Project
Directions:

In the following groups, illustrate what you know about the following topics as related to the Westward
Expansion. Be sure to include as many details possible. Remember to work together, while demonstrating
what you know about your select topic. Each group will work together to present their product at the
end of the lesson. Organize your group into 2-3 artists, 1 writer, and 1 presenter. The writer and
presenter will work close together with the artists in the group.

Standard 5-2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the continued westward expansion of the United States.
5-2.1: Analyze the geographic and economic factors that influenced westward expansion and the ways that these factors
affected travel and settlement, including physical features of the land; the climate and natural resources; and land
ownership and other economic opportunities.
5-2.2: Summarize how technologies (such as railroads, the steel plow and barbed wire), federal policies (such as
subsidies for the railroads and the Homestead Act), and access to natural resources affected the development of the
West.
