ePortfolio Reflection Paper
In this course, we were taught about the basic elements of effective communication.
Throughout the course, each chapter introduced new vocabulary words that helped define, and
illustrate the effective paths of communication. The knowledge that I gained in this class is
transferable to any section of life.
The first example of how I could apply what I learned in this course, would be to take the
information utilize it in another course of mine. I am currently taking three other courses, and
one of them is on marriage and family relations. Within that course, I am required to complete
several weekly assignments, where I am asked to state my opinion on something. Each time I
respond to an online discussion, I am sending a message through the internet. I am using the
internet as a channel, to send my message, therefor making me the sender of the message. Other
classmates of mine and the instructor of the course, will be reading my message and are whats
commonly referred to as the receivers. Within these messages, I would use either instructional or
relational communication tactics. When using instructional communication, I would essentially
be using messages that are aimed specifically at answering the question, or task, at hand (Adler,
Elmhorst, & Lucas, p. 8). When using relational communication, I would be using messages that are
worded with more emotion and that mirror the thoughts and feelings of others.
The second example of how I could apply what I learned in this course, would be to apply it to
the work place. Each day at work, I am constantly using multiple channels of communication. The two
most common channels I use, are face-to-face meetings, or by emailing via the internet. Depending on
how much information I want to get across, or the richness of the message, and the how quickly I want it
to get across to the receiver, or the speed of the message, will help me decide which channel to use. If I
went with the face-to-face option, I would be using a form of synchronous communication. If I went with
sending a message via email, I would be using a form of asynchronous communication.
The third and final example of how I could apply what I learned in this course, would be to apply
it to my outside, everyday life. Through networking, or expanding my contact list, I am able to meet with
and connect with new people every day and form lifelong friendships and relationships. I can prepare for
a job interview by practicing my responses to different forms of questions such as direct, indirect, factual,
open, and close ended questions. And last but certainly not least, I can make sure to mindfully listen to
those around me, and avoid listening barriers such as environmental, physiological, and psychological
barriers (i.e. annoying phone rings, auditory discrimination, and preoccupation).
