FRACTION ACTION

5. NF.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed
numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a
way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like
denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b +
c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
Objective: I can add fractions with unlike denominators.

Objective
Students will be able to:
1. Add fractions with unlike denominators and persevere in
solving algorithms and word problems that depict realworld experiences, with fractions.
2. Subtract fractions with unlike denominators and persevere
in solving algorithms and word problems that depict realworld experiences, with fractions.

Watcha know about

fractions?
Ms. Yakonichis class read the most books this
semester in 3rd grade. After reading 200 books, the
school decided to award her class with a pizza
party. Ms. Yakonichi has a total of 15 students in
her class. 6 of Ms. Yakonichis students can only
eat cheese pizza, because of allergies. 3 of her
students enjoy eating sausage pizza. The
remainder of the class loves pepperoni pizza. Help
Ms. Yakonichi come up with how many students will
choose to eat cheese, pepperoni, and sausage
pizza out of her whole class, using fractions. How
many students enjoy pepperoni pizza? How many
students will eat cheese pizza? How many
students will eat sausage pizza? Illustrate and
explain your answers.

Problem of the Day

two types of cookies.
They used 2/3 cup of
sugar for one recipe and
1/4 cup of sugar for the
other. How much sugar
did they use in all?

Fraction Tidbits
Fraction:

a numerical quantity that is not a whole number.

When an object is divided into a number of equal parts then
each part is called a fraction.

Vinculum
(Fraction Bar):

vinculum = "divide by"

Numerator:

numerator says how many parts in the fraction

Denominator:

says how many equal parts in the whole object

When adding fractions

Note: Fractions must have the same denominator.
Find a # (number) that the denominators will divide into.
