Formatting and Submitting Assignments

i)

This assignment must be done in a group. A group may consist of up to four enrolled
students.

ii)

This assignment consists of a choice of four problems. Answer one problem only.

iii)

Show your working clearly (extract the usable information, state the general equation of
the problem, method of solution, conclusion).

iv)

The solution must be typed and in English. The standard font shall be Times New Roman of
12 pts with 1.5 line spacing. The text must be 1.5 lines spaced and printed on one side of
the paper. The paper used must be white, A4 in size and of at least 80 gsm quality.

iv)

Please include the given cover sheet with your name, matric number and program clearly
labelled.

vi)

Do NOT place your assignment in plastic sleeves, binders or folders. Staple the assignment
cover sheet to the top left hand corner of your assignment.

vii)

The assignment must be received NO LATER THAN 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 23,
2011.

Problem 1
Find the current I ( t ) in a curcuit with R = 11 , L = 0.1 H , C = 1 10 2 F , which is
connected to a source of voltage E ( t ) = 100sin 400t . Assume that current and charge are
zero when t = 0 .The differential equation for RLC-circuit in current I(t) term is given below
1
LI ''+ RI '+ I = E0 cos t
C
(Hint : E (t ) = E0 sin t , Q(t ) = I (t )dt )

Problem 2
A series circuit consists of a resistor with = 25 , an inductor with = 1, a capacitor
with = 0.002 , and a 12-V battery. If the initial charge and current are both 0, nd the
charge and current at time t.

Problem 3
A spring with a mass of 2 kg has natural length 0.5m. A force of 25.6N is required to
maintain it stretched to a length of 0.7m. If the spring is stretched to a length of 0.7m and
then released with initial velocity 0, find a equation which fulfil the Newton Second`s Law
and find the position of the mass at anytime t.

Problem 4
A spring with a mass of 2 kg has damping constant 14, and a force of 6 N is required to keep
the spring stretched 0.5 m beyond its natural length. The spring is stretched 1 m beyond its
natural length and then released with zero velocity. Find the position of the mass at any
time t and mass that would produce critical damping.
